Rep:
might be a software modem...
I've been having similar woes, as I'm trying to use Mandrake on my Dell. As I have recently learned, most PC's built today have software modems that have limited compatibility with Linux. Find out exactly what kind of modem you have and make sure it is compatible. If it is, you may need to find a driver. Otherwise, you may need a different modem.

I might be wrong on this, so forgive me,
but I seem to remember that Mandrake had both
hsf... and hcf.... drivers in their rpm database.( 9.2 only )
If you are a clubmember you can get them for sure.
If you are not a clubmember , try anyway.
I don't know what is freely available or not
Myself, I got an external serial and my problem is solved forever
Sorry.can't help you here.
Know nothing about cable.
But PPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE, next time you got a problem of any kind,
always state clearly what hardware you have
that way you save a lot of time, and people will be far more cooperative
thanks, and good luck.

If you have the cablemodem you mentioned above AND you have a linksys ethernet card then all you need to do is make sure you use the Ethernet port on the cablemodem, just connect it to your Ethernet card and configure accordingly. You shouldn't have to install any special software for the cablemodem to operate via Ethernet (unless you're trying to use the cablemodem via it's USB option which I wouldn't waste my time on). I've setup many Linux systems on cablemodems without any trouble at all, if your Ethernet drivers are working then your OS should pickup an IP address from the cablesystem's DHCP server. Unless you were assigned a static IP address in which case you'll need to configure that yourself. You "could" use the DrakConnect wizard in the Mandrake Control Center to set that up or you could do it via ye old command line in the shell.
p.s. Since you are using a cablemodem I'd highly recommend that you purchase an Ethernet surge protector to go between your cablemodem and the computer or network you connect the cablemodem to. I've seen way too many people around my home get hit by surges via the company's coax cable connected to the cablemodem.
