Mandrake 9.2 hangs freezes when using KDE during diffrent intervels
Hello
I installed mandrake 9.2 which i downloaded from somewhere. The install took a while but if finaly worked. Anyways when using KDE the system would hang total freeze. It happened a couple of times when i was accessing an NTFS partition, once when i was running Mozilla, onces when i was running RPMdrake to install software, and once when i was changing the skins of Mplayer. there is no particular reason to this. I searched around for a while and found out that it might be something to do with ACPI so i added "noacpi to the lilo.conf file and it was fine for a day, then it started again. when i rebooted the computer by pressing reset i lost access to my SATA drive which has my windows XP partition. so i turned off the computer and disconnected the electrical cable for 30 secs and everything went back to normal but the system still hangs and freezes at random intervels.
My thoughts to this problem is as follows:
1) Could be NTFS related but the freeze happened acouple of time even when am not accessing NTFS partitions
2) Could be ACPI related but if i turn off APIC option in bios windows doesn't run.
3) Could be the SATA controller but it finds it find.
4) Could be the Nvidia chipset
Which of those do you think and any thought would help. bare in mind am a newbie so explain as much as possible
here is my system
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0
AMD 2700
Geforce 4 Ti4200
1 GB memory
1 WD 80 GB HD on SATA 0
1 WD 16 GB HD on IDE0
1 WD 12 GB HD on IDE1
1 Asus 52x CDROM on IDE2
1 Plextor 40X CDR on IDE4
2GB jazz on SCSI
250MB ZIP
if there is anything i missed let me know.
Ok since no one replyed i will :P
The problem is that this board doesn't mix APIC/ACPI well with UDMA. So you need to compile a kernel that would not support ACPI/APIC and things would be fine.
Check out this guide, helped me a lot!!! http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/view...3ea9c73bbf95ce
I spent half a day trying to install Mandrake 9.2 on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (ver 1.4) with an MSI GeForce 4200 Ti.
The install only goes as far as the part where it loads X when you configure the display / video. After that it hangs.
Not sure if it's caused by the Mandrake "updated" iso's that I downloaded or more likely, incompatibilities with A7N8X Deluxe and Mandrake. As I did not have too much time to do trial and error, I was not able to test whether it will the install will succeed if I set ACPI/APIC to off in BIOS. I did not want to do this as it might mean a re-install of XP which is running on another drive (I was planning to dual boot).
I will try installing the same Mandrake updated disks on an Intel box to verify if the problem is with the CDs I burned or motherboard incompatibility (in the case of the A7N8X).

I just logged in to post the same thing. This thing is driving me CRAZY, it's even worse than windows ME... TOO much freezes
I went to the link Bozwayed posted but it's outdated so I'm not trying it. Anybody knows of a patch for Mandy 9.2? Better yet, does anybody running a similar config than ours has the same problems in mandrake 10? Because I'm planning to buy the v10 powerpack but I'm wouldn't be so sure if I get these stupid freezes.
Hi guys...finally installed MDK 9.2 last night...still busy coniguring.. using an ASUS P4PE-X motherboard Nvidia 512k ...only time i had a problem was first time thru....lilo failed...installed a second time and eveything went thru ok..still don't have sound (gotta find ALSA driver)...and usb ports are being recognized but are not working.(the penquins laughing at me on that)...but no freeze ups...maybe because it's a linux only machine...no windows here...finally
ps. was installed from the powerpak not download...
Well, I finally got Mdrake 9.2 working... on my Intel box. I am typing this on a Konqueror browser...
The problem was due to the Mandrake Updated Release 7 iso's I downloaded (4 CDs). These iso's also caused my installation on my Intel box (Intel P4, MSI 845E motherboard, GeForce 4200 Ti) to freeze almost at the same point where it froze on my AMD (ASUS A7N8X) box. I used the regular 9.2 iso's (download edition - 3 CDs) and installation went with no hitches.
I still haven't fully configured the system completely (3d Acceleration doesn't seem to be working) but 2D looks great (tried Gnome and KDE desktops, and The Gimp so far).
After I am sure that all features of Mandrake works on my Intel Box, I will try and install it on the AMD box again. The reason is I plan to build a dedicated box to run Mandrake / Linux and I want it to be an AMD box because it is cheaper.
