mandrake 9.2 greeter problem

i have a problem with the mandrake 9.2 greeter. i f*cked up my system and was able only to log into bash. now i just re-installed xfree86 and got it started up, but now i can't return to bash anymore. the system overrides and cycles between the mandrake greeter, the gnome greeter and the basic wm that came with xfree86. my mouse isn't working and there is very little i can do. i can't even access the xfree86conf file. i am a total newbie.

so the problem is that i can't return to shell anymore. even by pressing ctrl-alt-backspace the mandrake greeter takes over and prompts me to log in. how can i disable the damn greeter??
