I'm a total newbie. I installed Mandrake 9.2 on both mine and my sister's laptops. Pretty much everything worked just fine right off. However, on her laptop, it gets stuck as it is shutting down. She has to restart it, go into XP, and then shut down. Mine works fine, though. Anybody have a similar problem?
at what point does it get stuck? are you pushing the power button or using a command?
when it shuts down it goes through a list of items it is stopping, where does it stop?
if it gets to the end and just sits there i would say acpi is not turned on.
If your sister is trying to log out and shutdown she may have a problem similar to mine.
If I log out or attempt to drop back to init level 3 by keystrokes, the X server quits and
I get a black screen but no prompt. She should be able to open a Run Command dialog
box and type halt to get the laptop to power off.
thx for the speedy replies guys. yeah, it just sits at the very end of the shut down process, after all the stuff gets listed. she's not here right now, so i'll try your suggestions later on today.
whether i use the halt command or the sbin/shutdown -h... command, the result is that it goes through all the shutdown processes and gets stuck on halting... The other machine just shuts down after this. I figure I could just hit the power switch at this point, if all the processes are done. What exactly goes on in the halting... process? Does someone know?
this is a typical scenario for a laptop that needs acpi but doesnt have it on. so is yours on? look in the 'configure your computer' go 'system' then 'drakxservices' look for acpi in the list and see if it is running. if not go to the 'boot' section of the control center and configure and see a check box for enable acpi. if it still doesnt work go to your lilo or grub config file( if using grub go /boot/grub/menu.lst, if lilo it should be similar) then add acpi=force to the kernel line for the linux boot section. normally acpi=on should work but on my system i had to use force as the bios was older than it wanted to use acpi for( something that wasnt an issue with 9.1)
an example from my computer:
title linux
kernel (hd0,1)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 acpi=force devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi resume=/dev/hda5
initrd (hd0,1)/initrd.img
hope this helps, if not let us know and we'll go from there.
