mandrake 9.2 crashes

hello people,

Ive been running mandrake for quite a while now (about 5 months) on an 2 hdd machine with winxp on the other hdd. Recently I have just installed mandrake 9.2 formatting all linux partitions (except 1 partition that had my documents on it). the installation went fine.

I then compiled the nforce drivers and nvidia drivers for it. The system seemed to be working fine for the next few days.

I've not been back onto linux for about a month and needed to burn some things from my linux partition. I booted up linux and started kde which froze. I tried ctrl+alt+backspace and ctrl+alt+del which didnt work so i ended up restarting the machine manually.

I tried to boot into linux again but the machine crashed while checking the partitions after my manual restart. I noticed that the hdd led was constantly running although no sound of activity was occurring. so i waited for about 10 Min with no change in state and tried to restart again and ended up doing this manually as well.

Finally i managed to get into linux and started kde. everything seemed to work. however, while a was burning my disk the system seemed to freeze again and the burning light on my writer stopped. I noticed the same hdd led was constantly running with no sound of activity occuring. With no other choice i had to restart again.

I decided to copy my files over to a fat32 partition I have on the same drive to burn under XP. again the system crashed with the hdd led constantly running and no sound of activity occuring while copying the files. i then restarted a number of times due to the same freeze above while linux boots and was checking the partitions but finally i managed to get into kde again. I copied my files without any problem although I was constantly shuffling my mouse around to notice any crash.

I then tried to copy some more files after a few days but the same crashes occured.

does anyone know the cause of the crashes/freezes-my fat32 partition on the same drive seems to be working without any problems under winxp. any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Justjoe770

Is XP completely on one disk, and Mandrake completely on the other?

Reason I ask is because last year my Hard Disk started failing. I would use it for 20-30 minutes before the Disk powered down and everything locked up. This happened on my Windows partition as well (only one HD). Eventually the time I could use it got less and less.

Replaced the Hard Disk and all was well.

Could it be that your Mandrake HD is dying? Your XP install should not be affected, as it's using a different disk.

That dosn't meen that the sectors that Mandrake are on are not going bad. So just to check goto the manufacturers web site and try to find a disk checker of some sort.
Don't let winblows do it or it will continually try to "fix" the linux partitions.

Other than that try to use the first Mandrake disk and reinstall the boot loader. maybe the reinstall will find the partitions correctly for you. You can always manually edit the lilo files to reflect the partitions correctly.
