Mandrake 9.2's boot process entirely done in console mode before loading in X mode...

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 9.2 (including all the patches) a few months ago and everything is OK.

However, since I installed the latest kernel (26mdk binary and source), the boot process is entirely done in console mode. By that, I mean that before when it reached the "Press I for Interactive Startup" message (or something like that), the boot process continued in X mode. Now, it does not do that anymore, although I still end up in X mode (KDE)...

Any idea why?

Note: It is not a big deal, I am just wondering if I did something wrong or if Mandrake change the way it is doing the boot process.

it sounds like bootsplash has been disabled by your new kernel. I have no idea, but i assume its included in the mdk kernel, but wasn't setup to run. You should find the steps you need to fix this at bootsplash.org. Bear in mind, i'm a slacker, so might be wrong

Hi,

I think you are right. I must confess that I did not had the time yet to check carefully the link you have provided. I will soon!

On the other hand, I am wondering "Has anybody installed the latest Mandrake Linux kernel 2.4.22-26mdk?". The reason for asking this is that I did not do anything particular when installing this update and I am wondering if it is MandrakeSoft that has introduced a small bug... I am not saying they did, but nobody told me otherwise yet.

Well I installed the new kernel and when I logged into my personal login there was a big change. The icons in the 'K' menu had dissapeared and there were only a a few links appearing from each link in it. I thought that the complete panel must have been damaged. But how was that possible if I had only installed the new kernel.

Later, I went back to update and installed the regular fixes that I had not installed as root. Voila ??? Everything was fine then. The icons and the missing links all re-appeared back in the panel. I don't know what it was , whether a dream or a bug. I did do a reboot after installing the kernel earlier. So, surely must not have been an initialising problem.

BYE,
Dino.

Hi,

I had to reinstall Mandrake 9.2 because of a mistake I made. However, in doing so, I discovered that MandrakeSoft (probably) did provide a modification to their 2.4.22-26mdk kernel rpm. Why? Well, when I first installed this kernel in January, I noticed two problems: 1. The bootsplash problem (the reason for this post in the first place) and 2. The /lib/modules/2.4.22-26mdk/build symbolic link was missing and therefore causing compilation problems with some source package (like NVIDIA latest drivers). When I reinstalled Mdk 9.2 this last weekend (including all the updates and the latest 2.4.22-26mdk kernel), everything was OK.

Now I know, you might say that I probably did it wrong in the first place or I played (i.e. tweaked) too much linux. That would be a very wrong assumption because I do know what I am doing (i.e. I used to be a UNIX sysadmin) and, most importantly, I do not tweak or play around with my OS. I am almost sure (about 90%) that the 2.4.22-26mdk was changed between January and now.

Hi again,

Well, I forgot to mention the possibility that another update (or updates) did correct the problems I had. However, my initial instinct tells me that the problem was the kernel update. The reason is that I did check and install all updates when they were made available and the problems I had were there until this very last weekend.
