Question Mandrake 9.1: Strange bootloader prompt

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 9.1 from the ISO's onto a separate ext3 partition and setup dual-boot bootloader (lilo graphical) and it all seemed to go fine until i rebooted. When I rebooted the bootloader menu doesnt appear and i just get a "grub>" prompt and a message telling me that if I type TAB I get a list of commands. It also says that it is a simple BASH CLI. What is going on, i dont understand...

TIA

that's a strange one. no idea what is going on...

boot from your first installation CD, press F1 for more options, then type rescue. It will get you to a menu where you can choose to reinstall the bootloader. Maybe this'll help.

I tried that already. I would like a solution, but I have temporarily switched to my RH distro to alleviate the vomitting that is induced by using M$ software. Mandrake was my first Distro... i liked it. Brings back memories. It was cosy...

If you can boot you Mandrake, simply use the Control Center to reinstall the bootloader.

btw: Might it be that you used the text CC to install your bootloader? I've had mysterious problems with that, because it simply wouldn't go beyound the 'choose bootloader type' screen.

If you can't boot Mandrake, you can still boot the rescue (like quatsch said) and fix it from there. All you need is lilo.conf knowledge, because chances are you'll have to write one from scratch.
Then say 'lilo', and lilo will install itself.

I assume you never made a boot disk and tested it U naughty boy.

2) Like the others said get cd1 to boot b4 your hard disk.
then press F1 at inital screen then type rescue and press enter
At the 2D (NO MOUSE) screen choose
mount your partitions
Then select console and type
/sbin/lilo
and see if lilo re-installs your bootloader.
