Mandrake 9.1 not release IP Adress!!!

I was trying to set a server in my home network.
Yes I consider my self a newbie.
My conclusion is
Linux must be great, but not for all, or at least not for all purpose.

I losted a lot of time and the worst of all:

My linux box not want to release the IP address from my cable provider!

Oh beautifull microsoft ipconfig!!! where are you in linux ?

I tried

control center-network graphical mode ---nothing

(This stupid program reconnect automatically on log off)

ifconfig ---- nothing (maybe some trick for the linux gurus)
ifdown eth0 ----- stops the interface, not release the address
net stop ----- nothing

What the hell dhcp client uses Mandrake ? And how to release the address?

Try using linipcfg, the Linux equivalent of winipcfg.

In Control Center-Network, you can specify your IP, DNS and hostname. I think it's the wizard at the bottom of the Network page (not in Linux right now)

linipcfg ? how to start it from the shell ?
The control Center, as I said in my post, can change the configuration but NOT release the IP address.
It seems to me that this control center doesn't "control" anything.
For example, following your advise I changed the eth0 configuration, and make it to not run at startup, but looking at the reboot messages, the eth0 was started from the script.....
Or maybe the interfaces are controlated from other soft, like shorewall?

Jalos, are you on a Dual boot?

If so, perhaps try first going into windows and goign to a DOS-prompt and typing: ipconfig /release

The boot back into linux and it may load up ur eth0 configuration correctly.

OneNight, no my box is ONLY LINUX....
The hard solution maybe is to install Red Hat over this...
They don't give me multimedia (sound, mp3) but works fine with the baiscs...

Thanks
I tryed but Linipcfg only SHOWS the information, doesn't change it.
The page you teach me says that linipcfg is a front end to ifconfig, at this point I prefer to try command line utilities...
Some ideas?

From a console type
man dhclient

check out option -r and see if this will help.

If you are not familar with man pages, use the up and down arrow to scroll and press q when you want back to the command line in the console.
