Mandrake 9.1 and kernel 2.4.22-26

Will I have no problems installing this on Mandrake 9.1?

I have downloaded the kernel-2.4.22-26mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm file and was wondering whether it is neccessary to download the kernel-2.4.22-26mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm file.

umm... you shouldn't have any problems updating just the kernel by doing that, and no, you don't have to download the src file. Well, you don't unless you need to meddle with the kernel for whatever reason.

Just out of curiousity, why are you staying with 9.1 and not upgrading to 9.2?

FYI
The mandrake kernel package is a pre-compiled kernel. This is fine unless you want to run VMware or have extra drivers. Then, you need the source.

The source should be avalible on you 2nd CD. If not goto http://rpm.pbone.net search for kernel-source and browse for your source. try to download one that is close to your pre-installed kernel

I got mandrake to test out the whole Linux experience sometime last year. I'm still pretty new after a couple of months of inactivity on the Linux side. Essentially i was disappointed by not being able to setup my Aztech UM9100 USB (win)modem so that took some of the wind out of my sail. I'm trying to get myself back into it.

Also I would need to buy the upgrade as I connect over a 56k line at home so to download would take forever.

Won't I need the source to install some programs?
