Mandrake, 500hz usb, kernel rpm??

Hi!

I use Mandrake 10.1 and im a new to linux. I was thinking to patch my kernel to get higher hz from my usb mouse, just like in the linux-gamers tutorial. (cant post urls because this is my first post :> )

The question is that I have installed kernel sources from rpm (because of the nvidia drivers needed it) and i'd like to know that will my usb be patched with
patch -p1 chmp-r5-FULL.patch and then just menuconfig etc etc? Will it work on the rpm source or do i have to compile a brand new kernel or something?

This might be a stupid newbie question, but I really dont want to ruin everything like i once did when messing up with kernel.
