mandrake 2005 LE will not install at all

hi all!

i decided to give mandrake 2005 LE a try but alas it will not even begin to install. my system specs are as follows:

athlon64 3000+
asus kv8 mobo
geforce 6200
SATA 200GB HD
512 MB SDRAM
NEC ND3540A dvd writer
SONY dvd-rom

i got the 3 iso images from a magazine and i burned them to cd's. when i reboot my machine it boots from cd and it brings up the initial mandrake installation screen. i press F1 and choose an appropriate kernel (tried all 3 with same results). when it boots up the kernel image the screen just stays black and there is no activity from the dvd-rom whatsoever (dvd drive works just fine btw). the only option left is to reboot.

i tried to install using text screen or low vga. the text install goes a bit further than the vga but it still hangs. same with low vga.

has anyone else encountered this problem? is there any kernel parameter i can pass to bypass the hang?

thanks!

It could be a hardware compatibility problem or a problem with your installation disk. Have you tried making a fresh copy of your installation disk and retrying the installation.

There is a 64-bit version for Mandriva. The one you got probably isn't.

redazz: i have made fresh copies of the installation but to no avail....what kind of hardware problems could there be? older version of linux i.e. xandros 3.1 installs just fine.

samael26: im probably using the 32 bit version, but shouldnt it install on a 64 bit processor just the same? its like saying windows xp non 64 bit edition cant install on a 64 bit processor.

Well I would also suggest that you'd be better placed to try the 64bit version as well. The 32 bit version will probably install, but would, I suspect, need a bit more work than just being able to "bung the disc in" and off you go.

You'll either have to surf for a mirror or better still, send a few £££$$$'s or whatever and get them to send a disc (or discs). The paid for versions usually have a few extra bits and pieces that you don't get with the download version.

regards

John
