Mandrake Internet
 

I am very much a newbie. I have Mandrake 9.2 install on my system with XP. I have no idea how to get my internet working in Mandrake. It works fine in windows. Other than that, I LOVE this OS. No need for this one if I can get online with it. I have high speed that comes into my apartment complex. I simply run some cable from the wall jack to my PC. My NIC is intergrated onto the motherboard and is made my 3com. Help Please!! Thanks for helping the:newbie: . Only decided to give this a try yesterday.. You'll have to baby me through it. :)

In normal circunstances, you should be able to configure the network entering Mandrake Control Center; there must be an option to do it there (sorry, I'm not using mandrake right now, I don't remember the exact path, but is quite straightforward)

Open Mandrake Control Center...Go to Network and Internet. Then click on DrakConnect helps you set up your network and internet connection. You'll then see a button that says Wizard. Click that button and it will take you step by step setting up your network connection.

Yeah I did all the stuff with the wizard... It asked which driver to use. It recognized my nic and what model it was but when it askes for a driver the exact one isn't there. Most say "failed to load" but one siad it had loaded or something then it gave me 3 radio buttons. Yes no and view hardware or something like that and it goes back to the start. :( I would like to switch but I can't if I can't get online.

I'm sure if you google for Linux drivers for your specific card, you could find something there too.

well, that depends. did you download in .tar.gz or rpm format? Which driver was it? if it was a .tar.gz format, it should have instructions in it in the form of a file called readme or install or something similar.

I had the same issue with eth0 and 3Com. I think I can cut to the chase on this one for you.

The skinny is that the fix to the 3Com eth0 init error was found buried on the Mandrake support site. The solution is described in detail in

As root, try adding the following line to the ifcfg-eth0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts:

MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=1

and to execute

/etc/init.d/network restart.

My network fired up perfectly after that. If you have done a normal install, my guess is yours will too. I would probably stop fooling around with driver downloads and stuff like that until you have looked at this.

I'm really suprised that this issue continues to pop up with Mandrake installs - seems like something they should prioritise to fix.

Thanks a lot. I think I'm on the right track with this one now. The only problem is, I don't have a ifcfg-eth0 file. I think I had a ifcfg-lo or something like that.
