Mandrake 10 won't boot to KDE

Please be gentle with me as I'm new this Linux stuff.

I have installed Mandrake 10 onto 2 partitions on a WINXP PC

After the install, where all seems to go OK, the PC Reboots and I get the lilo menu.

I select Linux
Get the Mandrake Splash Screen
THe KDE part comes up, It gets to 85% and then stops, after about 1 minute the screen goes blue and thats it nothing.

I reboot back to Linux, this time KDE comes up, but without desktop ICONS, play for a bit and shutdown. shutdown fails to complete so I reboot.

It does some repairing because of an unmounted partition, and reboots
Back to Linux again, this time KDE gets to 28% and stops, nothing for 1 minute then blue screen

I reboot again, back to Linux, this time gets to 85% with a message box saying Knotify (sp?) failed to install, I choose try again, nothing happens
I Reboot again, back to Linux, KDE to 85 % get the same message box select something about "arts" (sp?), again nothing happens.

I have now installed 3 times and I get exactly same sequence of events

What am I doing Wrong ?

The first thing to do is to boot into text-mode, 'init 3'.
Try at the bootprompt:
linux init=3

If it doesn't work, when KDE stops you can probably switch to a text-console by pressing
[ctrl]+[alt]+[F1]
Once there, start with taking a look at the logs. Post it here:
# cat /var/log/XFree86.log
there could be a number there too, just type 'XF' and hit tab, you'll see the possible names

Pingu,

I did what you suggested, waited untill KDE faild to load then ctrl + alt + f1
then the cat command on XFree86.log

How do I store that somewhere so I can post to this Forum ?

Sorry if this seems such a daft question but I'm really new to the Stuff.

TIA

MG

Hmm...
I can't find something really wrong here. But you should edit /etc/X11/XF86config-4, all those "not using default mode ..." means there are videomodes defined that can't be used. (This will not give the errors you have, only means it takes time to start X. Fix that when computer is working.)

But your problem is somewhere else.
Trembling in darkness:
*) check diskspace with 'df' , if any partition is full (especially / and /home) that could be it
*) check filesystem: Now I don't know what partitions you have, check if you don't know with
# fdisk -l (shows you all partitions)
# df (shows mounted partitions)
(In the following I assume you have /dev/hda2 and /dev/hda5 for your Mandrake.)
su to root
#su
<enter password at prompt>
#init 1
# mount / -o remount,ro
#e2fsck /dev/hda2
#e2fsck /dev/hda5

All I can think of right now, return with results, I'll try to think in the meantime.
Oh yes, to get an output to a file, use >
# fdisk -l > /mypartitions.txt
will write a file /mypartitions.txt
