Mandrake 10 USB storage troubles

I've been able to get my coolpix 4300 camera to mount as sda removable device. I can access the memory card but copying from it is extremly slow. I'm using emelfm2 to mount the device. If the camera shutsdown it locks up emelfm2 and anyother application trying to access the storage, it does not matter if you bring it back up or not. Just need to kill apps and reboot to fix.

Is there an updated usb storage driver that works better in communicating with other apps.

Maybe if I create a mount point that would work better, will try that. while I'm waiting

I've got a coolpix 3700, that mounts perfectly with Mdk10.
But for security of your data, you should know that you must not use supermount!
You should disable supermount, and make it user-mountable. Then add a mount-applet for it on your desktop. That's because it is using the MSDOS filesystem, which is very fragile, and AFAIK, there's no way the coolpix could do a fsck in case of trouble

Also, you say that it shuts down. That's because it is too long on. There's an option in the coolpix' Setup menu for having more time before shut-down.

And yes, it is slow. That's because the coolpix' processing power is far bellow that of your PC. Besides, it is probably using the USB1 protocol. I was suggested to use a SDcard reader for the PC, but I did not try, yet.

BTW, I had a strange problem with my coolpix. May I ask if you encountered the same or heard about it:
I was on holliday, and one day, the camera displayed "This card cannot be used". I shut it down, then powered it again, and all was OK, except the 2 photos, and 1 film, I had on the card were not there anymore! 3 files is not a lot, I let it go. I took tens of photos/films, and then 5 days ago, the error message appeared again! I lost everything! So I decided I would look on the computer what was on the card. I pluged the coolpix, and mounted it, and what did I see?? The 3 old files of the beginning I thought were lost forever!!! But only those unfortunately  ...

Just like you said it's a fat filesystem. Your battery might of died while it was writing a picture, corrupting the filesystem, probally best to reformat the card if this sort of event happens.

I havn't had a chance to play much with the mounting stuff yet, still trying to get a mail server package running.

Under WinXP the picture's transfer very fast, so it's not the camera, something in the linux drivers. I've only had my system up for 3 days now, still newby newby LOL I've also noted if I remove the camera and install it a couple of times the hotplug stuff fails to see the storage device to bring it back up unless I reboot, I was watching the server log. Strange...

It's sad the very little knowledge I have of digital cameras couldn't help you. I have no other ideas...

As for my problem, batteries were fully charged, so no luck. Thanks for helping, anyway. Bye,

Yves.
