mandrake 10 usb driver/modem problem

Linux newbie here.

I have installed mandrake 10 on a computer with a cable modem pluged on a usb hub. Everything worked fine, until I pluged a card reader for my digital camera on the hub. At first, the booting got stuck on searching for new hardware. I managed to boot without the card and to plug it once logged in. I then started the system set-up program and went to the hardware icon. If I look a the inventory, all is there, the card reader and the cable modem are identified.

The problem is that now the modem doesn't seem to work anymore. I get the eth0 interface installed at boot up but it doesn't seem to work and I cannot log on the internet anymore.

My guess is that it is not a network problem but rather that the usb pilot used for the card is not working well with the cable modem. This is only a guess and I do not know what to look at for knowing why my cable modem does not work anymore.

Any help and/or pointer would be most welcome. I do not really understand how it all works and I do not know what and where to look up.

Thanks.

ps . sorry for the possible inaccuracies, as I said I am a bit green in Linux and I have to write this remotly since my linux box does not see the outside world anymore.

i admire you and give you a warm welcome in the word of the freethinker, in the word without bugs, without viruses and of logic.
as you look like someone that is trying linux for the first time. If it is so, You have wisely chosen mandrake.
Well as for your problem,I think I can help you. try running again the drack connect wisard, and restore the values you had before.
It is sometime i have switced from mandrake to slackware, ad the one i last saw was the 9.2. Still i think it should work. If it doesn't work, let me know, it is a terible situation not to have internet. If not, try do do what i always did when i didn't know what to do and needed help, unplug the usb card, and restore your mandrake by inserting your cd and choosing to upgrade your system. After that, run your connection browser, if it connects to internet, plug the card reader without reboting, it it doesn't work, let me know
