Mandrake 10 - Seems a little sluggish

Hey all... I am running Mandrake 10. I have it on a PII-350 with 512 MB of RAM. It just seems to be a little sluggish launching programs in KDE and such. I think I probably have too many things running as I pretty much selected everything when I installed it. But, being a noob I wasn't sure what to turn off or what to leave on.

Here is what I would like to do with the box...

1) Defintely need Apache running as I would like to serve my own web pages from it

2) FTP is going to be necessary

3) I have VNC running, and like to keep

4) Will eventually start serving up a couple of games in Unreal Tournament 2003 & 2004.

I don't have a sound card in it so I don't need any of the sound stuff loading up.

Again, being a noob I am just not sure where to go with this and would really appreciate some recommendations.

Thanks much....

Go to your control panel > system > services. Disable anything you don't need. Obviously you can disable all the sound stuff. I'm not totally sure what you do / don't need. Just read the descriptions on stuff. It's pretty straight foreward.

A PII-350 is going to bee sluggish, thank goodness you have enough memory. Try using a lighter window manager, the new kde is ok, but you will find others that are much less of a hit. IceWM should already be installed.
