Mandrake 10 - Parallel Port not detected

I have two parallel ports - lp0 for a Kyocera laser printer and lp1 for an Epson 1290. Both are detected under Mdk 9.2, but only one (lp0) is detected under Mdk 10. This first occurred when installing the boxed Powerpak, so then I tried:

1. reinstalling 9.2 to make sure I wasn't mad - worked fine, both printers detected and working
2. installing 10.0 as an upgrade of 9.2 (immediately lost lp1)
3. reinstalling 10.0, this time with disks I bit-torrented a few weeks back.
4. mknod /dev/lp1 c 6 1 (creates /dev/lp1 but not detected)
5. makedev (but chickened out when I saw the new lp1 directory it created and deleted the lot)
6. switching printers - Epson now works perfectly on lp0; Kyocera does not work on lp1

Theoretically I could use a spare serial port, but there's just a hole in the Kyocera where the serial interface would normally go.

Why am I bitching about having only one printer? Well the old laser is cheap for bog standard printing jobs but no good for photos.

Incidentally, the green frog ADSL wouldn't start using the boxed set disks, but works fine using the bit-torrented set. Has anybody else similar problems?

Any ideas anybody?

Cool second parallel port not detected

Well, the answer it seems is to load and boot from 2.4.25-2mdk; that generates parport1, which you can ln -s to /dev/lp1 (after deleting the directory that has been created in this name). Thanks to Mdk Expert - quite simple really.
