Mandrake 10 Official Install Problem
 

Hi, ive downloaded Mandrakelinux 10 Official from bittorrent. I burned them onto 3 cd's at 8x. I also have the install folders on my hard drive. I have 2 separate hard drives. Drive C:\ is for windows. The second hard drive is partitioned. Drive D:\ and Drive E:\. When I restart my PC with the floppy, it boots up linux install and everything. If i press enter to install, the progress bar appears, and finishes, then it opens up another window, and then it all freezes. The time at the top doesnt move, the mouse doesnt move, and my keyboard locks up. My mouse and keyboard are both usb if that matters. I run a AMD athlon XP 2500+ on an asus motherboard. It has 512 mb ddr ram, and a NVidia Geforce 2 mx 400 with the forceware 2 drivers. Any help?

It may very well be the USB keyboard and mouse, I've heard of problems with USB peripherals in MDK.

Do you have any spare ps/2 mice and keyboards you could try?

Similar problem but different. I bought Linux for Dummies which has Fedora included and installed it w/dual boot with XP (for the rest of the family) but can not seem to grasp it, so I am attempting to switch over to Mandrake 10.0 from Fedora. No success though, the system wont boot from the official ISO I downloaded with bit-torrent. I have a spare (newer)machine that won't boot from the ISO of 10.0. It is not the boot sequence. Thats what brought me to this forum so I though it would be wise to register and ask. Other threads indicated that I needed to try to install from disk 2 and I tried that, still no luck. I did not try disk 3 though. Do I need a boot disk (floppy)? I believe that if I can survive the Linux learning curve it will be "better with the penguin". I feel like I should sign this frustrated in Florida.....

iwant2learn, you have to make a floppy disk. Open up your 1st cd for mandrake, and go to the folder dosutils, and open up the program called rawwrite or rawwritewin. Make sure you have a formatted diskette in your disk drive. Using rawwrite, open up the images folder in the 1st Mandrake cd, and select cdrom.img. Then press write. Restart the computer with that disk in you floppy drive, and the 1st install cd in your cdrom. That should help.

As for my problem, can i use a usb to ps2 adapter, or do i have to use an actual ps2 mouse and keyboard?

A USB to ps/2 adapter would work. I wouldn't go out and buy one or anything, just borrow one or something to see if that may be the problem. It may very well not be the problem, but it will help narrow it down. I'm not an expert, I'm fairly new also, but since no one else has responded yet, i figured i would try to be of assistance.

How did you burn the ISO's. If you did it correctly, you should be able to put the cd in your drive and see many folders and files from windows. If you did it incorrectly, you would only see the ISO file.
It's a common mistake of just burning the ISO file as data to a cd using windows' built in program. You need to use nero or some other program that will allow you to burn iso images.
If that's not the case, download the official iso for disc one from one of the ftp sites that mandrake has on its download page. You may have a corrupt iso file.
