Mandrake 10 Locks up at Startup - Newbie help PLS
Hello, I'm very new to Linux and am having some install, startup problems. I'll try to give as much info as I can.
I've built a new system with an AI61 AMD K7 motherboard with 900mhz processor 512 ram. It has a new Maxtor 20 gig HD.
I ran the offical install and used the enitre HD and let Mandrake choose the partitions, everything seemed to install fine. I rebooted and choose the Linux-secure startup first. I did get my fist lockup at the USB detection step, read a lot here at this cool board, then disabled the USB Host Controller in the BIOS - it get's past that now.
Now it stops at Activating Swap Partitions. I also get a failed at a few step before that at the unmounting initrd: unmount: /initrdi - device is busy.
After reading several more post I read to turn ACPI off and to change the LBA. I do not seem to have a ACPI setting in the BIOS and I have tried setting LBA to normal and auto with no change.
I can startup in failsafe and use both KMD and GNOME destops and things seem to work - as far as I know. Not worried about if the USB works, since it will be a web server.
I've looked thru the BIOS and can not see anyother settings that might apply to the HD - it's Award Software.
I was thinking of trying the older 2.4.7 kernel. I have worked just a little Unix with my Mac OSX server, but do not know how to go about building the new kernel.
If anynoe has some ideas about my problem, any help would be great. I could also use a few pointers to install the older kernel - please start at the beginning :-) I can catch on after I get a little nudge.
Also - a really newbie question - does Apache have a GUI in KMD? and if so, how do I start it...
Thanks for your help.
