Mandrake 10 loading but i cannot log in!

Hi,

I have only just restarted my computer after about a week of running and when Mandrake loads up i get a strange log in box. It has a list of users, i select my name and when i try to log in, the screen goes blue then it goes back to the log in box with the list of users again! I have never had this type of log in screen bfore, so i may have changed some setting or something.

I am trying to log into the gui by the way, i am useless with the cli.

thanks.

k
press and hold ctrl+alt+F5 (or F6, anything but F7 really)

try your log on there (ie username and password) if it logs you in, try running startx

if it does not log you in, try logging in as root.

and if the reason it would not log you in, was a faulty password (which this doesn't sound like) reset it (passwd username).

you say the screen (GUI login) looks wrong, so odds are your system is starting the wrong display manager kde = kdm, gnome = gdm and anything (prolly what you are seeing) xdm

i don't remember where you can change that, and am not on a unix box atm ... i'd start looking at /etc/rc.d/rd.M or /etc/rc.d/rc.5

odds are that if you didn't change those files, but upgraded your GUI (and i'm guessing something like that was done), something was over-written or did not install properly, in which case, re-install the gui ...

if startx worked, odds are your /etc/rc.d/rc.M or 5 file fluked out, and just needs a quick fix.
