2.4 vs 2.6

The mandrake version I used before this was 9.1, it has kernel 2.4.something, and it didn't have a single problem with this same system. That's why I suspected a 2.6 issue in conjunction with the mobo/chipset I have.

Now that you said Fedora, I think i'll download it and give it a try, just for the fun.

As we say here in Venezuela, what's another stripe to a tiger?

Yep, and to top it I have it working with an AGP GF4 Ti4200 I wasn't using.

Perhaps it's a combination of IGP + 2.6 + Mdk10, kaboom

What brought me to this thread is that I have 3 shuttle boards and had been testing them with various distro's of linux. (Sidenote: Some installers are deplorable (e.g., debian, gentoo, slackware--although slackware isn't that bad)). (Sidenote 2: almost all of them have problemmatic sound support--very flakey consistency).

Anyway, during the installs of Mandrake 10 it would lock on me. Periodically I would get an install but it would then lock after some use. Programs like setiathome would crap out with segmentation faults.

I tried these under RHFC1 and 2 without problems.

Then I started looking for answers to the lock ups as I could vaguely recall that someone had referred to Mandrake locks with the nforce2 chipset.

I managed to find bios updates which solved my locks and other problems but it is disheartening about the price of Mandrake and the really lack of overall support especially considering the cost of it over 2 years compared to the cost of say WinXP home. I can deal with the price but it is the lack of care that troubles me most.

I have had good success though in getting the nvidia chipset drivers installed under most of the distros. I'm just a regular user who is sort of testing out linux for a long time. I very much like linux. There are some serious limitations to it right now. It will get better but I don't expect to see much for the next 5 years only because it has taken them 10 years to get to the rough cut stage they are in now.

Linux for everyone

Let's hope that with the "gentle" push of the heavy hitters like IBM and the like things improve faster than that

That's it

Well, I tried, but I'm done with this, I switched back to Mdk9.1 yesterday . . .

Tried Fedora C2, and that #%& has issues with WXP in dual boot.

Didn't even try to use Mdk 10 again. I'll wait until they release 10.1 or better, perhaps.

Yesterday installed Mdk9.1, installed NForce and GeForce drivers and all ok, all is working. Now I'm using this "konstruct" package to download and install KDE 3.2.x.

I don't plan on experimenting with another distro in a long x 10^30 time.

And, by the way, Next time I shop for mobos, I'll buy ANYTHING but Nvidia / Biostar in any combination. Nvidia vid. cards are OK though.

Thank you very much guys for all the help.

Hey Man:

You gave up too soon my friend. I have a working system now and I have a BIOSTAR M7NCG 400 MoBo based on nForce2 nVidia Chipset with GNU/Linux Mandrake 10.0.

It's working excellent for me...

And you have it in dual boot with windows XP?

You're using the IGP vid. adapter or using another vid. card?

I saw that thread you mentioned earlier on this one. I tried (most of) what's there, and yes, Mdk10 installs and boots, but still get random hangs and errors.

BTW, this mobo's las BIOS upgrade dates from 2003-09-17, right?

CORRECTION: I see a bios posted on 2004-03-12, i'll check it out 2night at home. They should order updates descending for us to notice them easier!

Hi Man:

I'm using dual boot with XP, but to avoid problems with MBR an that stuff I prefer install the LILO BOOT on a diskette, so when I want Linux, simply put the diskette and reboot.

I was using the integrated videocard but give me problems NOT IN LINUX but in windows, so I get another card similar to the internal one, an AGP nVidia GeForce 4 MX 400. This is strange, because this problem was not present before, and I'm sure that Linux is not involved in this because I was another distributions installed before. But as I mentioned, give me problems with XP, Linux is working very well.

Until now, can't discover exactly whats the problem... but I have a suspicious list:

* The BIOS Upgrade
* The newest nForce Drivers COMBINED with the newest Graphic driver
* The newest graphic driver.

Since I don't have my original drivers anymore, I can't test it... but the most suspicions are the new drivers because WinXP was working very fine until I installed the newest nForce Drivers. I can work with XP Without install the nForce Drivers, but I don't have sound, Net card, etc...

Have you checked this...? work with a fresh new install of WinXP WITHOUT install any nVidia driver... and then install the drivers to see if begin to fail...

If that occurs to you too well thats the answer, maybe the new nForce drivers are flaky... is anybody who have been the same problem with the new nForce drivers..?

The newest BIOS for my MoBo is dated 2004-03-12...

NForce . . . hmm

Let me tell you that NForce drivers on XP on this mobo *ARE* troublesome.

I usually run the Driver setup sans the IDE driver, those simply didn't work for me. Instead of doing as advertised, you know, accelerating disk access, they actually did the opposite.

Tonight I'll flash my mobo to the newest BIOS and try . . . again . . . to install Mdk10

Excellent Man:

And don't forget to put your IDE Hard Disk on LBA mode BEFORE installation and install Mandrake with "linux noapic nolapic" options to ensure install works correctly.

I'm sure your Mandrake will work as fine as mine.

Good Luck!!

MagikFingerz.
