Mandrake 10 Install issue: No cdrom device found
Hello,
I am using a Dell Poweredge 2400. The CDrom is attached to an adaptec scsi controller. When I try to boot from the CD (cd2 works better...) i see the following:
Boots from CD, Asks to "Please choose the installation method"
I choose "Cdrom drive"
About to load the driver for scis adapter
Dell Powered expandable Raid controller 2/si
About to load the driver for Scsi adapter
Adaptec Aic7880OU
Then in the log, it says:
Pci: device 9004 8078 ffff ffff is Adaptec aic-7880, driver is aic7xxx
have to insmod aic7xxx
needs aic 7xxxx
succeeded aic7xxx
looking for ide media
looking for scsi media
SCSI/2:sr0 is a NEC CD-ROM Drive 466
Looking for Compaq Smart Array media
Looking for dac960
unsetting automatic
The Kernel window says:
Scsi: : adaptec aic7xxx eisa/vlb/pci scsi hba driver rev 6.2.36
Adaptec aic 7880 ultra scsi adapter
aic7880 Ultra single channel A Scsi ID=7
Using anticipatory io scheduler
(scsi0:a:5): 20.000MB/s transfers
Vendor: NEC Model: Cdrom drive 466 Rev 1/06
type: CDROM
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive 17x/40x cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
uniform cdrom driver revision 3.20
attachjed scsi CDROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun0
YET with ALL THIS, I still get "No CDROM device found", even though all this data has come from the CDrom because I didnt use a boot floppy.
I tried a boot floppy as well, but that didnt help any.
Any ideas??? Thanks!

I had a similar problem recently but it was with Cooker 10.1 and not 10.0.
The way I got around it was to boot with the 2.4 kernel and not the 2.6 kernel.
When the install starts, hit F1 and then alt1 for the kernel.
Another thing that worked well was just to remove my promise ultra100tx2 from the system, everything proceeded normally after that.
I realize my hardware is really different than yours, but you could try installing with the 2.4 kernel, and switch to 2.6 if the install works, it's worth a try.

Since you haven't installed 10.0 yet, why not install Mandrake 9.1? It uses the 2.4 kernel and is more stable than 10.0. Just look at all the Mandrake 10.0 problems. I'd avoid Mandrake 10.0 if I were you.

Fixed!
I was about to take the advice and install 9.x. I downloaded the Iso's, then i realized all my CDrs were 650mb. Foiled, I began thinking of an FTP install when I found the "alternatives" directory on the Mandrake CD and created a boot floppy with 2.4 as suggested.
2.4 worked fine. Mandrake 10 is installing as i write.
Thanks folks.

Similar Help
I have a similar problem with an Adaptec SCSI controller. I'm sure I'm dense, but I don't seem to be able to follow the prescribed solution.
I currently run Mandrake 9.2. I go through the boot procedure (with Disk 2 since it won't recognize disk 1 as bootable). Use F1 which presents different boot options (low vga, expert etc). Alt 1 at this stage to choose the 2.4 kernel? It doesn't seem to have an effect. Alt 1 after select the option? Because the next step is to boot via cd-rom and that continues to fail.
Any help here would be great.

to load the 2.4 kernel
type alt1 and then hit enter.
If you have a HP DL 360 G3 Xeon box you will also have to load the 2.4 kernel.
I have just spent the last 2 days trying to get the Raid controler to find drives, And or to find drivers to load part of expert mode load. The only fix with Mandrake 10 was to load the 2.4 kernel.
