Hi,

Freezes normally occur during hardware configuration, and I'm not sure how easy it is to stop Mandrake from trying to auto-configure packages, since it is essentially a hands-off installation. All I can really offer is advice on checking the disks you have are not corrupt.

Rather than re-downloading or re-burning, just use the md5 checksum files which are made available with the iso files. You can find a very good md5 howto for both Windows and Linux here:

http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html

Probably not much help but at least it eliminates that one possibility. If you have never run Linux on this machine, get hold of a Knoppix CD and try booting that - it's a good way to check all your hardware is supported.

Frankly I think 2.6 kernel isn't very stable. Try insalling in text mode, that worked for me. During the first screen push F1 for options. Type text and push enter.

I have the same problem, but mine freezes at differnent points in the installation. My system runs 9.2 just fine except for the network. I think mandrake 10 or kernal 2.6 is crap. Cant believe they released it like this.

ya. man 10 seems really funky. it does strange things. Does this freeze usually around any probing of integrated parts ? like integrated vid card or such ?

thomadm 06-21-2004 09:50 PM

My install freezes while copying files to the hard drive every time. ive tried text install and it does it even quicker. System runs fine mandrake 9.2 fine and winblows xp too.

Mdke 10Offc install hang - ramdrive

I too am unable to install Mandrake 10.0 Official on a machine that runs 9.x (9.1) without incident.

The Mdrke 10 Ofc install utility hangs almost immediately with the error message stating that the utility is unable to create a ramdrive.

Any ideas?

sorry to be of no help here either. I only ever had a Man problem when it had to do with integrated vid, integrated sound or integrated network/modem. have you tried to tell it to format those partitions ? is this happening on a upgrade ? man 10 seems to have many new funky problems. I moved back to man 9.2 cause of them. I do know though. when you have man 9.x installed. Man 10 does cause many problems. Try starting the partitions over & such. If you have nothing to save or you have a backup of your stuff. I guess it is sorta like man 9.0 that was a weird version too. maybe man 10 will change and be better in time.

I tried to install both Man 9.2 and 10. They both crashed at certain point during file copying.

I have no clue what would be the problem.

I ran memtest an it yielded no trouble whatsoever. So it is not RAM. Ironically Red hat 7 worked fine. RH 7 is the last Linux I used successfully.

Any idea how to make Mandrake to work ?

If you have this problem, and especially if you have a nforce2- try this.

when you boot, and it comes to screen hit F1.
type:
linux noapic nolapic

HTH.. :)

I did find the post that offers that solution. Unfortunately this trick does not work for me. I have ATI 128 Rage Pro AGP 4x. And CDs I downloaded did pass md5 check sum.

My configuration is:

P-3 667
Asus P3V4X VIA MB
20 MB HD
HP 9100 CDRW
Toshiba DVD
524 MB RAM

Mandrake Installation always freezes at point it is trying to install bootloader-utils

10 Official installs OK now - ISO prob.

Thanks to someone that suggested I try an MD5 checksum on my downloaded ISO's, I discovered that my first CD image was corrupted. I re-downloaded (and MD5'ved!) the image, burned the CD and voilą, my Mandrake 10 Official installation is now working.

As far as I can see up to now, the distribution is very well constructed. My compliments to the Mandrake team!

I had the install freeze when it was copying files to the harddrive. I ended up getting it to work by installing in text mode, which is what I would have rather done in the first place, but never realezed there was an option. All I know is I wasn't too impressed with it, so I ended up going back to Slackware.

I also didn't like how it wanted me to get my Additional Driver Floppy out. I almost stopped the install right there. Oh well. I'm back with Slackware 10 and couldn't be happier now.

well, i'm using Mandrake 10.0 Official Powerpack+ and never had problems with installing Mandrake 10.0 over my 9.2 system.
I installed it well on AMD Barton 2500+, 512 DDR Kingston, Asus V7100 Pro, Vibra Sound card, Quantum 40 GB, Asus CDROM, Mitsumi CDRW and everything is working perfectly on my box :)

craigers 08-09-2004 06:36 AM

since my last post, i got mandrake 10 official installed using text mode...
however, now it locks up when i preform random tasks when i use it and at random places when i try to load mandrake

I had mandrake 9.2 before i installed 10 and it ran good but that whole partition got whipped thanks to carelessness at 4am

i also installed 10 on a few of my friends computers and they run really good, no crashes and installation went good.

I am wondering if mandrake 10 does not support my motherboard or maybe the memory (ran memtest and it passed 100%)

any ideas on why it locks up during use? or while it boots?... i already tried disabling sound system and hat was no help
