Mandrake 10 help please
Hello All,
I am n00bie when it comes to Linux but I have been really pumped to get it on my system. It seems so much better than XP. I used Knoppix for awhile but I think I am ready to get Linux Mandrake on my system. If you all could help that would be great.
First of all I got Mandrake 10 completely installed and everything configured the way I wanted it. I had no problems with my mouse keyboard or anything as I installed it and got everything configured. After I rebooted and choose linux to boot up to and It doesn't boot up all the way. I get an error Message.
I wrote part of the error message down and it is the following:
[<c010afa9>] sysenter_past_esp+0x52/0x79
code: 00 77 07 b8 ea ff ff ff 5d c3 89 0d c0 51 32 c0 31 c0 5d c3 90 8d 74 26 00 8b 0d cc 86 40 c0 55 41 89 e5 31 ....
<0> Kernel Panic: Fatal Exeption in interrupt
interrupt handler - not syncing
Thats what I had wrote down but if you need more to debug the problem could you help me find a way to copy the boot log? I have the three Mandrake 10 CD's Handy.
I am using a duel boot with Windows XP.
My Specs are:
Intel P4 1.8
512 MB RAM
80 Gig Hard drive -- C:(5gig) D: (48gig) Z:(2gig) Linux Partition (20gig)
Logitech Elite Keyboard (USB)
Logitech MX500 Mouse (USB)
Monitor A90F Viewsonic
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256 MB
RECAP:
Can't Boot up to Mandrake 10 I get an error message. If you need the last part of the boot log, which you most likely do, I would need help to go about copying it.
I appreciate anything you could do for me. Thank for all of your help in advance.

Just a guess, seeing as nobody's answered yet. Check in your bios if the IRQ's are being handled by the Operating System or by the bios

Yup as suggested, try toggling the state of the setting then fully powering OFF your machine.
This means also unplugging the power cord and hitting the power button while disconnected.
Once you plug it back it this will cause the bios to reallocate IRQ resources.

Hello Again,
I tried powering off and unplugging the system for 30 seconds about 4 times. Everytime I tried to boot up in linux it gave me the same format of error as above. A few things I forgot to tell you that might help are:
1) I am using a dell demension 4500 S, which has a onboard video card, however in windows I disabled it and I am using a pci. I changed the setting for video card in the mandrake setup when I installed however.
2) I am using a Lexmark X1155 Printer/Scannner/Copier which connects to the computer Via USB. The drivers could not be found when I installed Mandrake.
As for the IRQ Settings I checked my BIOS and got the following:
Nvidia Corp vg adapter ............................. 11
Intel corp serial bus .................................. 11
intel corp multimedia ................................. 11
intel corp video adapter ............................ 11
intel corp usb adapter ............................... 11
intel corp usb adapter ............................... 10
intel corp usb adapter ................................. 9
intel corp usb adapter ................................. 3
(unkown manf) network card .................... 11
======================================
Here are my availabe IRQs
3,4,10,11,14,15
Reserved - 5
Well i hope this will give you guys enough information to help me if you need more just reply.
Thanks again for all your help,
~ Camo

Ok, try booting Mandrake using the Failsafe mode.
See if it boots that way.
If so you may want to look at the kernel parameters which are being passed via either grub or lilo and post them here.

Also did you disable the video adapter in BIOS and is there an onboard jumper that permits you to do the same thing?
Finally why is IRQ 5 reserved?

hi again opjose,
I tried booting into failsafe 3 times, even after unplugging my computer while it was powered down. I got the same error!
My bios has only two options for my onboard video. Either to use it or Auto. It is pretty gay. I updated my bios and it is still the same options.
As for the IRQ # 5 being reserved I have no idea, it just is like that in my bios. I wouldnt know how to check what would be using it either, nothing listed in my bios is using it.
looking at the kernel parameters is something I am not sure how to do. Is there a way you could tell me how to do that?
Thanks,
~Camo

Failsafe mode pretty much turns on all of the kernel parameters so to speak.
If your computer would boot with a kernel parameter, then it should boot in failsafe mode.
What motherboard does your system use? Make, model and chipset?

Hmm the Intel 845 chipset is pretty darned stable and tends to work great under Linux.
Do you have any USB devices plugged in, including card readers, etc.?

Hi,
Yes I have 3 things plugged in the majority of the time.
1. USB Keyboard
2. USB Mouse
3. USB Printer Lexmark x1155
In the mandrake setup it didnt find drivers for the printer. The keyboard and mouse worked fine. At the point I am at in my setup it is showing it loading the usb devices and then thats when the screen scrolls really fast and shows the error. Maybe something on the usb has something to do with it. Also what I noticed is it says press I to go to interactive setup (while booting) and my keyboard lights are not on. Should I try unplugging everything and booting up or would it matter?
Thanks,
~Camo

Yes, to paraphrase, it matters "big time".
If possible plug in a PS/2 keyboard and unplug the printer.
Then try COLD booting into Linux.
(completely shut down, AC removed, hit power button to discharge unit, then restart...)

I suggest sticking in your Mdk 1 CD, and then select the 'upgrade' option and see if that fixes the problem. (Upgrade does not erase any of your personal documents, settings, etc.)
