So feel fortunate. Im here to figure out how to give myself cd permissions since the manpages are so wrong and the usermod command fails when you do it exactly like the manpages tell you. My advise is: Do as I do and find a better linux

It has nothing to do with Mandrake.

These problems are usually due to hardware issues which unfortunately the end user is forced to work around.

I have Mandrake 10.0 and 10.1 servers running 24/7/365 without a single hiccup.

yes you are probably right, I imagine it could be that my sata drive could be a hardware issue that arises 2 weeks after installing. or maybe the HT technology could be it. and being only a month long user it must obviosly be easier to find a better distribution that toss my drive or cpu or whatever else the problem is and start over.

remember I am not the guru you are and I dont even know how to determine just what hardware problem is the issue since it does not happen ever 20 hrs but every 2 weeks.

I will say I was very happy with mandrake until it crashed the 2nd time. well I would have been a whole lot happier with sound. If you are willing to help me determine whats wrong I am more than willing to try any advise you have.

A short rundown of my hardware is as follows:

CPU: intel p4-3.0eHT 1M L2-cache, 800MHz FSB (the kernel detects it as 2 p4-3.04 cpu's, I imagine that is the HT in action but not sure, the only difference i can see between them in the control center is the bogomips)
Motherboard: MSI 865PE Neo2
Harddrive: Seagate SP8012c SATA - 80G running as the 3rd Master
CD: Sony running as the 1st Master
Video: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 64Mb
Sound: Intel 82801EB AC'97 Audio (onboard)
LAN: Intel \x{200E}82801EB (ICH5) PRO/100 VE (onboard)
it appears all the controllers left to describe run off the southbridge, Intel 82801EB (ICH5)

I tried to make this as complete as possible if you need anymore info please just ask

As for the sound problems:
Which application have you tried?
Are you running KDE?
Have you unmuted the varoius mixer entries?
Have you searched this forum for the other sound-related questions (there are many)?

KDE yes.

Unmute: I am not sure where to find any mutes, the Kmix does not show anything muted
the little speaker icon next to the clock show no mute. The speaker also has a big red X over it.

Applications: Ive tried playing audio cd's, movie clips with totem, test sound in the config tools.

Searched for sound issues? No, i put that priority far below the crashing problem.

I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone for such wonderful help here. I got all of 1 reply in over a week and it was off subject. It really makes me glad I signed up and that there is help out there when you really need it.

Is it just me or do I sense a bit of sourness in your comment?

Remember this is a forum of volunteers that cost you nothing to sign up for.
If you really need help why not fork of a couple of dollars/pounds/yen/whatever and pay Mandrake
for some support (since I guess you haven't bought the MDK CD's which would've enabled you
three months free/prepaid support).

As for being off subject: You mentioned you would've been happier with sound and I tried to help
the way I could.

And those every once a week errors are really hard to find the culprit to.

The only thing I've read about loosing filesystems and HT was this guy (http://software.newsforge.com/articl...69208&from=rss)
who saw problems when he started using a SMP kernel.
If you're running one of those perhaps you could try a single cpu kernel instead.
