Mandrake 10 Community memory leaks anyone?
Anyone else experiencing memory leaks in v10 (with kernel 2.4.25)??
I've been analysing it for a couple days now, but i can't yet pin it down to anything in particular, so i'm wandering if it's something core. If i leave my PC on overnight (which i normally do) then by the morning most of my 480mb of ram is gone. And i AM looking solely at application memory, and not even worrying about shared or cached memory.
The only thing i can see that has a large amount assigned to it in the morning id kdeinit, but i thought that was a script?
One thing of note is that i installed with the 2.6.3 kernel, and then reverted back to 2.4.25 because of the known usb mass storage device camera compatibility issues. Maybe that has something to do with it, but i don't know why!?
Anyone else seeing memory issues, or is it just me? Running a stock Shuttle SN45G2 if it matters.
Martin.

I had no problem with beta2 up for a month. I was using the 2.6.x kernel though. I have had the 10ce up since ~ the day after it was released w/o any memory problems (uptime 17 days now) .
I notice that RAM fills up during regular use with 256MB, occasionally using the swap, but with 512MB it is fine.

Hmm, okay. I had no problems with Beta2 whatsoever, and in fact i was REALLY impressed with it. RC1 was a MAJOR step backwards, although i seem to remember that it was largely cosmetic things and app things rather than fundamental things. K3B CD writing was completely broken for me for instance (haven't tried that yet with the release version!).
I took this rather broken phase as an opportunity to isolate all the things i didn't want to loose into the home partition, and try out a few different distro's. Actually gave Lindows a very good run for it's money due to it supporting my usb wireless card (but that's another story all together).
Back to the point!
Just after my first post i reinstalled kernel 2.6.3, fired up my email and left it for 2 - 3 hours while i watched a film. So far so good, no apparent leaking.
I'll leave it up overnight and see what happens.
If still no real problem by the morning then i'll recompile my nvidia driver (i'm currently back to the frame buffer X driver because of the change in kernel) and leave it for another day.
Hopefully i should have an idea by the end of the weekend what's causing it, but i'm suspicious of the fact that during the install, i went with 2.6.3, then i retreated manually(ish) to 2.4.25.
Will report back...
Martin.

Mandrake 10 CE memory leak
I have the memory problem too. It is apparent as soon as you log in.
No X required.
Any app started takes some free memory, but when the app is stopped the free memory and buffers are not completely released.
Do that enough times and all free memory is gone.
I have searched around for an answer but haven't found one.
I don't accept that it is due in any way with the amount of memory either. I have 512M.
This a standard install, with no kernel changes, on an AMD Athlon.

memory hog
I just installed Mandrake 10 CE this evening and noticed that my mouse can lag behind once in a while, and some programs are hanging at startup. Looking into it I found that almost all of my 512 MB is gone right away at login! If anyone has found a solution to this, I'd love to hear it. Other than this issue, I have been happy with 10.0 and would like to continue using it.

I have restarted again and I haven't seen this problem since. It seems to be a ghost.

Is this only with the 2.4 kernel? And how do I check available mem in Mandrake?

Memory is not released on Mandrake 10.0
I seem to have the same problem with Mandrake 10.0. I have 2GB of memory. After system restart it takes only few hours to fill up the entire 2GB of ram, it would then start using swap. This computer runs apache, php, postgresql, mysql, sendmail, pop3 and imap. It's a life server. Below is the hardware configuration.
Case: Antec Plus 660AMG
PSU: Antec TruePower 480W
Cooling: 4 80mm Antec fans, CPU default heat sync and fan
Motherboard: Abit IC7-MAX3
CPU: Pentium 4 3GHz (Prescott)
Disks: 2 X 80 Gb SATA Seagate
RAM: 2 X Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO
