Mandrake 10: burned install CD1 as 'bootable', but won't boot.....ideas?
OK, at work on the 20 MB connection I reeled in the 3 Mandrake 10 CD's. Burned them all, made SURE I checked the option to make CD#1 bootable (Roxio EasyCD 5), but altho BOIS says look to the CDROM on boot, it don't boot.....
I'm looking to over-write/fresh install on a working RH 9 box, the one i'm actually working on right now....
jeez.....I can't even find rawrite on disk 1 or 2; haven't looked at 3....
CDRom is Plextor R/W; 40/12/40A; I *seem* to recall I saw it was doing SCSI emulation on boot, if I am reading the boot process right and if that makes a difference....PII 266/400 MB ram...nothing too fancy.... (as it scrolls by at boot...)..it is secondary master.
I see bootcat.bin and bootimg.bin on that CD#1 (from within X, so I KNOW the CD's at least reading...); is there some concept that's eluding me?
Looking for where i've brainlocked here......its making me NUTS!
How did you download them? Did you grab the isos or the directories? Roxio 5 burns isos really well - go here to verify that you burned the images (if that's what you downloaded) correctly.
All you need to do is burn them to CD, insert disk 2 and boot your system. Follow the directions presented and insert CD 1 when told to do so..... Mandrake kinda goofed when they setup the boot image.
I got the images from one of the mandrakelinux.org mirrors, from the download page....I sorta just clicked on each directory, and saved as iso's...but I DID burn #1 as 'bootable', i'm gathering this was a mistake....
I'll re-grab cd#1, thanks for the direction.....
FYI, this is an install to replace the dying, polluted, crippled, on-the-way-out Win95 box for a lady i know, a non-technical sort who just needs a computer (student, gracious, karmic..). Hey --i'm a sport, the box was gathering dust in the closet. It has RH 9 on it; but the Network Device Control in Gnome is just too...fragile. As root, it seems stable. As a user, it just bombs.....i'm sure there's a fix, but..RH? I'm done. I'm looking for another way...i'll give Mandrake the $$ if it works...
Me, i've gotten lazy; I bought a Powerbook G4, and do just about everythig with it (state govt, wan tech, LOTS of Cisco...and hence zterm/ssh/etc....)
I've heard great things about Mandrake, on a user-level plane. All i'm really after is a stable dialer at this point; the RH9, I never installed Kde, this Mandrake install, I will....i've been told kppp is pretty robust.....
regards, thanks, and i'll drop a quick epilogue on how it shakes out...
There's a bug with CD1 of Mandrake 10 Community Edition: it won't boot on some PCs. Mine did not boot, and I bought it; I did not burn it.
The solution is to boot CD2, then when it asks for an install CD, you switch to CD1.
Yea, I gathered there was a problem there. If you don't mind me asking, what is "Community" version? Haven't seen that term anywhere in the English sites. Perhaps a French-specific distro?
I did try the 2nd CD, which I had burned 'normally', as in I didn't set it to boot via the Roxio burner...it in fact didn't boot. At work, where the fat pipe is, i'll reel disk1 in again and try again tonight....
