Mandrake 10 and VGAHI

I've downloaded all three disk for Mandrake 10.0 and installed them on my old laptop an IBM T20. I get all the way through until I reach the screen that asks if I want to install updates. No matter how I respond the computer locks up. I've tried it connected and unconnected I've said yes and no. It always fails. I have no problem running the live CD of mandrake, Knoppix ect. any Ideas? This only happens when I use the vgahi command at install.

I've nstalled it without the vgahi command and it works like a charm. However, its GUI is barely readable. Can I switch to vgahi mode after install?

Thanks in advance,
Alan
