Struggled with this for a while but got it sorted. The Mandrake make new connection wizard doesnt work for this modem so u dont have to bother with it on installation of system- go to http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/ and follow instructions. For silver modem get the rev4fw.zip file or else it sure wont work. Before u run the script open with editor and change line 237 to USB_TYPE=uhci or whatever (lspcidrake -v | grep -i usb). Make sure u change the part after the= to lower case. Then run script and all should be well. Even connects after reboot. Good luck

Hi all!

After reading tons of threads it seems that you describe the problem I'm faced with. I installed Mandrake 10.0 Official and I must use kernel 2.6.x because by now my NVIDIA card is finally working with this version and I have tested with kernel 2.4.x and it did not work. I still don't have access to Internet while in Linux because I have not been able to get my ADSL Speedtocuh 330 modem running (dark red color, but I assume is the same as all others, I hope!!!)

beagle2: I have tested that process and it did not work for me. When running the script I got lots of errors which unfortunatelly I can't post here since that happens while in Linux and now I'm in XP and as newbe I still don't know how to get access to linux directories while in XP, but that's another sotry

Waffel:

I have not tested the method you propose, so I was wondering if you can spend a bit more time and explain with more detail the exact steps I would need to perform to the point right before editing the four files.

Meaning:

Quote from Waffel:

"- First I tried to do a "normal" installation with drakconf (with pppoatm), without success (like you I suppose...), but it's important because you need the files that are created when you do this.

-Next you have to verify if the speedtouch module is present in the kernel modules (by default it is)

-you have to install the package pppoatm. Verify if pppoatm.so is in the directory /usr/lib/pppd/plugin Edit: With me it was in /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.3, but you have to check it...

-Put the mgmt.o file in the folder: /usr/share/speedtouch "

As a newbe I can understand what you mean with the instructions but I don't know enough of the commands to be able to do them without the detailed steps. So I would very much appreciate if you could detail a little more the sequence of commands.

Thank you all for bringing some light to this challenging experience of migrating from MS to Linux

If you can give us some idea of the errors u are getting when running the script we might be able to help further. Does the script run at all ie. do you get to the point of configuring your user name password etc or does it fail before then? If you arent running the script as root you will definately get errors. The firmware you use is also important but again if you can give some further info this method is certainly the easiest to get going. I too am migrating from xp to Linux and while its a bit of a slog well worth it in the end. Ps am using 2.6.x kernel

HI,

I experienced problems too when installing the Alcatel speedtouch USB modem with Mandrake 10 official

Here is the solution i found (thanks to forums !!! to make it work :

first of all you have to find the right microcode for your modem, this is a file named mgmt.o, many versions are available on the internet for mandrake 10, not all are working !!!
I can't remember on wich site i found the working version of the mgmt.o (As i downloaded and tried many ones) but can send you my version if you want to.

Once you have the microcode, you have to solutions :
1 - put it on a floppy disk and reinstall your mandrake Linux, the installation program will ask for the microcode.
2 - finish teh installation and put the mgmt.o file in the following directory : /usr/share/speedtouch/ directory before executing drakonnect to configure your modem (you'll have to restart your computer to make the whole thing work).

I wasn't able to make it work on mandrake 10 official, but only on mandrake 10 community. But i'm pretty sure i tried the wrong microcode while testing with Mandrake 10 official.

Hope this can help

Bye

I found no need to reinstall when I'd got my silver modem and Mdk 10.0 Official working. I just had to check a few pppoatm packages were installed, pop the right microcode files in /usr/share/speedtouch and configure /etc/speedtouch.conf. Then put my ISP details in /etc/ppp/, eg in peers/adsl and also pap- and chap- secrets.
