Mandrake 10.1 Xorg nvidia tweaks

I decided to try 10.1 last night, so I formatted my 10.0 CE partition and went ahead with the install. After a bit of hacking around, I got the nvidia drivers to work on my system. I read (here I think but I can't find it anymore...) that there were serious tweaks that could be applied to the xorg config file to get more speed out of X but I can't recall what they were. I poked around Nvidia's readme and it talks about rendaccel. Anyone have any experience with rendaccel and other options that might increase performance? I've heard that stock xorg performance with nvidia cards is slow as compared to some options that must be changed to get normal - fast performance. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

A lot depends upon your video card... but things like

"saveunders"
"backingstore"

and the agp parameters can have a big impact if your video card has a lot of RAM.

Also you may need to tell X.org the amount of RAM available explicitly.

128 megs is enough to use some of the video memory managing items...

e.g.

VendorName "nVidia"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPMS"
Option "CursorShadowYOffset" "5"
Option "CursorShadow" "1"
Option "RenderAccel" "1"
Option "Backing_Store" "1"
Option "CursorShadowXOffset" "4"
Option "Save_Unders" "1"
Option "CursorShadowAlpha" "60"
Option "DigitalVibrance" "0"

I forget what the RAM specification is, but most of the options for the nvidia cards are listed in the readme included on the drivers available from the Nvidia web site.

The AGP settings MAY make a large impact on performance, but this in turn depends in part upon how well your motherboard is supported.

That is, you may not want to try the Nvidia AGP driver/module if you find that another one is already getting installed (hint: lsmod ).

I have several systems with Intel chipset motherboards and all seem to use the Intel_AGP modules instead of the Nidia Agp modules.
