Mandrake 10.1 too bugged or something to connect..

with the dial up modem. I had purchased the 6 disc Mandrake 10.1, but couldn't even connect with the internet. I am using a CNet dial up modem that I know works with linux, as my husband had to install his Suse 9.1 Linux on my computer for us to be able to have internet access. How could I reinstall Mandrake and be able to get it to connect? I'm not fond of the Suse, as I find it's too difficult in locating things I need. I'm relatively new to Linux anyway. However, I paid for the Mandrake 10.1 so I want to be able to use it.

I don't have the payed version, but since you bought a comercial product you should not complain here. You should get in contact with the company that produced it (Mandriva) and demand support for the product you bought.

Have you set your modem up to work with KPPP ?

If you need help to do this post back and I'll help you.

Cheers

Can you tell us a little more about your system and set-up
Is it part of a home network or are you connecting straight through the modem
Is it a USB, serial or "what" connection between your computer and modem

as JK said, is KPPP installed if you connect straight to the modem ?

My system is just a personal computer that I built. It has KPPP on it, and it would dial out, but wouldn't connect. I'm using a CNet external serial port modem. It works fine using the Suse Linux that I currently have on here. Connects like a charm, just not with the Mandrake. I'll give a brief rundown of the system that I have. I have a Matx Socket 939 motherboard, AMD 64 3200 90nm 939 pin CPU, 512mb 3200 DDR Crucial memory, and AOpen GeForce 6200TC graphics card with Nvidia 6. I know there's much better graphics cards, but had to have one with a half height bracket.:newbie:

Have you gone to the Mandrake Control Centre
go >> main menu, >> system, >> configuration, >> configure your computer
enter root p/word
go >> Network & Internet

click on
"New Connection" or "Internet Access" or "Manage Connections"

I suspect your problem is there somewhere
let us know how you go
hope this helps

OK. You say that KPPP will dial out but won't connect. The pppd timeout may be set too low. Try increasing it to see if that works. To change the setting open KPPP and then click on configure and then click on the Misc tab. You will see a setting that says pppd timeout. Increase this value to whatever works. Sometimes you need to increase this to give the system more time to make the connection.

Also under the modem tab you will see some buttons to test the modem to see if the computer is set up properly to talk to the modem. Try these to see if everyhting is OK. And if you are connecting your modem with a serial port, under the device section where it says Modem device, make sure it is set to, /dev/ttyS0

Hope this helps you
