Very disappointed, bitter, and frustrated at this point.
Sorry to hear that, jonr. I was to, so the TEMPORARY solution for me at the time was to switch to the GNOME environment. GNOME works fine for some reason, but KDE is having issues.

As I mentioned earlier, if you get those 70+ fixes (200+ MB), then KDE seems to work normally again. I don't understand why they haven't released it publicly. Perhaps you should update your media sources? Just a thought.

I already despaired and am in the process of getting back to my nice working 9.2 version.

But it was very good of you to provide such a lengthy and detailed post of what worked for you. People like you are what make this discussion board the phenomenally useful resource it is.

I just don't feel I have time to fix for Mandrakesoft what they should have had in the distribution to start with. I believe they're becoming careless and rushed, probably because of their bankruptcy experiment. It's not going to do them any good.

I found this website that has the RPM fixes. I don't know how it works or how to install all the RPMS, but I'm just pointing you guys to the link since it's not showing up in the Mandrake Control Center, it seems. This is for Mandrake 10.1

Just so you guys don't think I jumped off a cliff with my computer in my arms or anything--after about four hours I'm back to a comfortable setup with Mdk 9.2, even got lm_sensors and acpupsd going correctly, OpenOffice.org installed for the fourth or fifth time today, etc.

I hope I can refrain from trying to "improve" my setup for a good long while. It does all I want it to do, does it fast, looks pretty.

Under 10.1 Official my DVD/CD-R(W) drive wasn't even recognized as /dev/scd0! Version 9.2 picks it up transparently, no setup needed. Same with mouse. And with this 550-MHz Pentium III processor the 2.4.etc kernel must work better than 2.6, because screen repainting is a lot faster and smoother. I suppose that has to do with the kernel....

My only concern is the eventual obsolescence of what I'm using now. That was the main reason I wanted to upgrade, just to "keep up." But I think now I'll just wait and see how long I can keep using what I have.
