Mandrake 10.1 mail server. emails not recieved.

Hi people.

I have setup a mandrake 10.1 computer with the default email server. I did this so that my PHP programs could seend email notifications when certain events happen.

I have been testing the mail() function and for some reason the only email accounts that recieve the emails sent by PHP are gmail accounts.

I dont know much (anything) about configuring a mail server and I was hoping someone could tell me where to start trouble-shooting this problem. Would the other email servers be rejecting the emails from my machine for some reason?

any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben.

Quit possibly. A few reasons it might be:

You aren't sending from a valid domain
You're on a dynamic IP black-list
You aren't the mail exchange specified in DNS for the domain you are sending from

Tell us more about your situation - are you sending from a consumer cable/ADSL/dial-up connection? Do you have your own domain name?

To TKEdwards

Apologies this is off subject but you have the email turned off and the usual PM system is not here that I can see.

Your signature as follows
¨Many problems in Mandrake/Mandriva can be solved by going to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org (or if its down googling for 'easyurpmi mirrors'), setting up access to the software repositories and then installing software through the Mandrake Control Centre (menu->System->Configuration->Packaging->Install Software) or using the urpmi command.¨

With Mandriva 2006 the package manager GUI has a selection to connect to an update site and does so without any further interference from me.

How does that affect the above . My first thought was that there is no need for the above. What are your thoughts?

Hi.

Thanks for your reply.

I am on a residential dsl connection its capped at 128 up and 256 down. I have a static ip address but no domain name that I know of.

I don't have my firewall setup to forward traffic on the email ports to the computer I am using as my server, as I didn't want it recieving email. would you recommend I fix that?

Cheers,
Ben.

There are lists of dynamic IP address blocks out there that many anti-spam programs are set to use. If you're on a residential connection it might still make it onto those lists even if its static , but I'm not sure.

If you don't want to receive emails then you shouldn't need to do this. What you should do is look in your logs of your email server or program. Otherwise if you can't find any logs telnet (on port 25) to one of the email servers you can't send to and try to send a message manually. See what response you get. Howto manually send an email using a telnet client: http://weblogs.asp.net/owscott/archi...15/394681.aspx
