there's a lot off differences in 9.2 and 10.1.
i wouldn't recomend trying to do an upgrade.
it's probably going to be less headache in the end to backup your home directory and install fresh.
i don't mean to be a pesimist, just saying what i think is the best choice.

There is a way to check to see if you will have problems...
Namely download a LiveCD version of Linux that uses the same kernel version (or one that is fairly close) to that used by the Mandrake installer.
Usually if the LiveCD with Kernel 2.6.8-x boots, then you'll have no problem with Mandrake running a 2.6.8-xmdk kernel.
