Mandrake 10(.1) for 64 bit processors
 

Have any of yall used it? if so what hardware. this is what i plan to use
AMD 64 3200+
Asus K8V Deluxe mobo
512 MB PC3200 Mushkin RAM
ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB
160GB Maxtor HD w/ 40GB partition for Linux
onboard sound & LAN

Anybody have any luck with similar system? i checked the Mandrake site and it says its all compatible...but you know how that goes...sometimes it all dont want to work together...any help and/or suggestions would be great.

I am running 10.0 on an ASUS K8N-E w/ AMD Athlon 64bit 3000, nvidia chipset (LAN SATA Sound etc), but ATI, not nVidia video. I can't even get the thing to run properly with a 32bit kernel. The nvidia proprietary drivers are an SOB to install. They now are conflicting with my kernel and cause random lockups when used, corrupting various configuration files along the way. But that doesn't apply to you if your mo-bo doesn't use nvidia SATA, LAN etc. If it does, look out. What normally is a 15 min install is going on for 2 weeks now and still going. This nvidia stuff is not Mandrakes fault and this is not a knock on them, they are awesome and have brought Linux to folks who would normally run screaming. Normally a mandrake install is like 10-15 minutes!

As for 64bit mode I can't even get my Kernel to run when compiled using the 64 bit settings. I have also read that others are having difficulty using Mandrake in 64bit mode. I am sure you've googled it by now. Since the AMD is fully 32 bit backwards compatible I suggest maybe waiting until its supported by Mandrake better.

Unless you are a guru I would go w/ a different distro for 64 bit, but 32bit you should be fine unless nvidia infests your mobo like it does mine.

thanks...yeah i am far from a guru..i have run Red Hat 9 on an old Pentium 2 and i helped a neighbor with his Mandrake 10 install on a P3 laptop...and that was a while ago...so i am lookin to get back into the Linux world with my new PC.
