Mandrake 10.0 Starting up problems

Hi, I am new to Mandrake linux and i'm running into a problem when i try to load it. Right now, I have mandrake[D:] and windows xp[C:] on the same computer. The installation part went fine, except that it asked for CD4 which i didn't have. After the install, I took out all the floppy disks and cd-roms and clicked on Reboot button.

When it showed the bootloader menu, i selected linux and pressed enter and mandrake linux starts to load. It shows a bunch of text, but then stops and shows: "Starting system logger:" After i leave my computer for a few minutes, it asked for my login so i typed in my username and password, but then it says:

Authentication failed ?cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?

So I can't get to the login window. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thx.

hi, i think you went horribly wrong on your install somewhere - and i think you only created one linux partition seeing that you suggested it is (d:)

But I'm not going to type out a long tutorial, but read this how-to thoroughly, i think thats the best advice i can give:

Thanks, that tutorial will be useful for me. I can't seem to find an ISO image for CD4. Do you know where I can download it? I already have CD's 1, 2, and 3. thanks again

if you become a club member you can get it, or if you go to www.loadux.com you can pay for the download. the reason why mandrake done this is because cd4 contacins commercial applications. so if you download the "GPL" version you only get cd 1,2,3...

on the other hand it's not an error that you never had it, just means you won't get those extra goodies.

ok, I got it working now. :D :D

I just uninstalled and installed it again, and it worked. i'm very happy, as you can imagine... thanks for the help!

A very similar thing happened to me when I first started using linux, with mandy 9.1. I reninstalled it and was so happy when it worked. So I know the feeling :)
