Mandrake 10.0 hangs on bootup

I'm taking an on-line class at CNET.com for the purposes of learning Linux and how to construct a dual boot machine. I used Virtual PC for the purpose and everything went fine, although I needed to tweak the display settings a bit during setup.

Once finished, the dual boot worked great, and I rebooted Mandrake several times without a hitch. The problem occurred when I changed the color quality from the most basic (256 I believe) to the number two or three setting. The machine simply hangs after presenting the bootloader choices. I have tried failsafe and other mechanisms but simply have no idea how to undo this problem.

Should I load the setup cd and change the display settings? How do I go about making that adjustment?

My thanks to anyone who can help.

Jim

you are shure it hangs?

cause it could be your graphic settings are the source of your problem.
maybe it is loading the system, only you won't see anything.

Try waiting the normal boot time, and check if you can enter a tty by
pressing ctrl+alt+F6 (F1 to F9 I think is possible) your default tty in
Mandrake should be F7. (did you boot graphic or text mode, in text you will
end in console anyway)

if you enter a tty you should see something like: user@tty6[/]#
you are now able to use commands (press tab)
now mandrake has a configuration tool called: drakxconf, it depends on your installation whether it is installed or not

type the following in console:

su (command for superuser)

#give your root password

drakxconf (command to start utility mandrake)

hopefully it starts up the utility, otherwise you should install it using the 'rpm' command

type: 'rpm --help' or 'man rpm' in console for further use

You can enter a console by booting the 1st mandrake cd and enter: rescue
it will load a rescue kernel with console

hope this works!

2 option, not recommended:

Otherwise there was a bug within mandrake installations!
Don't know if it works on mandrake 10.0?

Enter the install cd and deselect every possible option for installation ( don't partition anything, deselect them all, don't install
any packages or anything that selectable, only reconfigure your graphical system because this is the only change you want.

then install with cd's
after installation it appears that your filesystem is the same as you had.
