Mandrake 10.0 freeze at install

Hi,

I've downloaded Mandrake 10.0 Community (5 CDs, together with PowerPack) and tried to install it. It freezes randomly when packages are being installed, I tried several times in graphics or text mode, sooner or later it freezes (not at the same point though).

My computer is Athlon XP 2500, Asus motherboard, Manli Geforce 4 graphic card and 1GB of RAM. Any idea how to solve the problem? Thanx in advance.

Hi,

You should provide some more info on your system:

1. what is the motherboard model?
2. what type of HDD (ide, scsi, sata...)?
3. what is the type of sound board?

hi, i've seen something like this somewhere on a post, the person seemed to solve it by at the prompt on the first part of the install where you can pass command the kernel, type linuxmem=1024mb , i might be wrong where it could just be linuxmem=1gb but im sure the first one i gave you is correct. try that and let us know.

I'm having this same problem but specifying the amount of memory doesn't help it just causes a kernel panic error and prevents me from even getting to the install

I have noticed the same thing since R10 Beta2, it seems to be APIC. Try turning it off to see if that helps.

1. Motherboard is A7N8X2.0 Deluxe
2. HDD is Western Digital 120MB, I think it's IDE, but I am not 100% sure.
3. sound board is integrated in motherboard.

Thanks to all for your help. I managed to install Mandrake 10.0 using the following kernel parameters (among others, less important like hde=noprobe) at install:
"linuxmem=1024M noapic".

Good for you!

The reason I asked for more info was that my brother tried to install Mdk 10.0 with the same motherboard but with a SATA HDD and it failed when it tried to format the partitions. Mandrake was not able to recognized the HDD, at least that is what I was told! This is weid since, he was able to install Mdk 9.2. I guess it could be something about the 2.6.3 kernel. I do not know and he will not try Mdk 10.0 again, so......

Also, I found quite a few people having different kind of problems with this ASUS motherboard and with the SiL3112 SATA controller...

I am sorry to hear that. Maybe I was just lucky, because without noapic option I was also able to install Mdk 10.0 once (but only once out of 10 tries) in text mode, but because I didn't configure XServer correctly I did a reinstall .

Does your installation freezes always at the same point or randomly?

No, my problem was different. It recognized HDD and it froze when packages were being installed.

I heard bad things about ASUS motherboards as well, but unfortunately after I bought one.

My install is freezing while installing the packages too. I tried using the noapic param. with no luck. It doesn't do it at a consistent point either. After 2 to 8 minutes the cd just stops spinning, the harddrive light is stuck on and the pc is frozen.

System specs:
Chaintech Summit nForce 2 board, gig of ram, 1800+, 80 gig WD drive and GeForce2.

This same system runs 9.2 just fine (minus needing to rebuild some drivers).

Hey ! noapic is not sufficient with this mobo.
I've an Asus A7N8X Deluxe (rev2.0), with a SATA hard drive (seagate). A stable system needs noapic AND nolapic option passed to the kernel.

To do this, when you want install 10.0, press F1 for more options when the first CD is booting and on line type :
linux noapic nolapic
to make a standard installation but with the APIC disabled. It works fine on my system since 9.2, 10.0 RC1 and 10.0 Community.

Hope it helps you.

Thanks for your input, I guess I just got lucky with my install. What is nolapic option?

I don't know exactly, it seems to be different APIC, so nolapic is for "local apic". But I'm not sure.

If you experience system freeze under X, don't forget this. At the beginning, my system worked well, but some freeze in very variable timing (after 2 minutes, after 2 hours...). Since I added this option, my system have big uptime (for a desktop use, 8-10 hours), with many application (networking, multimedia like video editing and capturing, office, ET netplaying) and works like a charm.

I don't understand why some A7N8X owners don't needs to use these parameters, and some others are forced to use them. If anyone can explain us the APIC, he's welcome...
