Mandrake 10.0 corrupted????

Well..

I am new to linux, just installed Mandrake 10.0

During installtion i had 100's of package errors: error installing package
continue???

so I continued everytime untill it finished installing.

I booted into linux, and got to the console.

I logged in as root, and somebody told me to use these commands to enter the GUI: startx, startkde and startgnome

I tried all of them and got errors everytime

I also did xf86config.

tried startx and the other commands again, errors!

So, do you think my installation could be corrupted?

I can write down the errors if you want later.

Micro420 01-01-2005 02:43 PM

Yes, write down the error(s) and please post it for us. The more details the better.

Did you download and burn CDs of mandrake? If so, did you check the MD5 checksums? You could have perhaps had a corrupt download and that is why your install didn't go right. I am guessing that those packages it wouldn't install are some that are required for X so you wouldn't be able to get any GUI without X properly installed.

Damn... took out the linux HD, windows doesn't boot anymore.

I will do a fixmbr and burn those discs again, I am pretty sure either the discs or the ISO's are damaged. I downloaded them from linuxiso.org

I am not in the mood to re-install Mandrake before burning those images again.
So i cannot lookup the errors ritenow...

I had those package install errors on all discs (3)

Sorry, what is are MD5 checksums?

TheMajor 01-01-2005 10:13 PM

I fixed XP.

I am burning Mandrake now... hope it will work thistime. Using different discs, same burner.

The MD5SUMs are how you are able to check the quality and correctness of your ISO download. If the MD5SUM you generate from the downloaded ISO matches the MD5SUM provided from LinuxISO.org, then you have a good download. If they aren't the same, then you have a corrupt download.

TheMajor 01-01-2005 10:27 PM

and where do I find them and how do I check this?

Supermarine9 01-01-2005 10:31 PM

You first need to install a MD5 Checker. Once that is done, you'll need to HASH the ISO file you downloaded. Compare the results with the MD5SUM provided at LinuxISO.org. They are right where you downloaded the ISO files. If you go back to the webpage, you'll see what I'm talking about.

TheMajor 01-01-2005 11:27 PM

Well... i just installed again, got same errors, and it got blank when loading Xserver.

I will see if I can do the MD5 check.

Thanks for your help!

OK, i am verifying ritenow.

So I only need to get the same number to be sure its OK?

Hey,
I had the same problem with Linux 10.1 on my ppc. My problem ended up being the partitioning. I did it, more or less, wrong and got very similar results.
I apologize if this is an obvious angle you've already looked at, but I saw you were new, and I am too, so thought I'd throw my $.02 in.
:)

TheMajor 01-01-2005 11:51 PM

well... I did "auto allocate" partitions, then rezised the /home partition to a smaller size from 30GB to 10GB.. if that matters.

TheMajor 01-02-2005 12:13 AM

just did a checksum on ISO disc1, had a few errors and warnings.

TheMajor 01-02-2005 12:13 AM

disc2 wrong value as well! DAMN

TheMajor 01-02-2005 12:21 AM
