Mandrake 10.0 - can't configure my dvd

I have a CD burner that is supposed to be able to read DVDs (and I am pretty sure it worked before I reinstalled Mandrake 10.0) - it's a Philips CDRW 5200 according to the label. When I go into the 'System configuration tool' it only finds a CD burner and can't see it as a DVD reader, apparently; and Xine etc can't open either.

So what's wrong? I can't seem to find any option in the kernel configration that turns on support for DVD - I believe there used to be one?

Any suggestions?

Try this command:

ls -al /dev/dvd*

Post up the output here, as this may give us an idea of the problem.

I have already pointed /dev/dvd to the CDROM (/dev/cdroms/cdrom0; CD burning etc works):

$ ll -a /dev/dvd*
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 13 Jan 3 15:43 /dev/dvd -> cdroms/cdrom0

$ ll /dev/cdroms/
total 0
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Jan 1 1970 cdrom0 -> ../ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

OK - Lakota, I installed:

libdvdcss2-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm
libdvdread3-0.9.4-3mdk.i586.rpm

- but I still can't read the dvd. Xine gives the following messages:

The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g. no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd)

xine engine error. There is no inpuit plugin available to handle 'dvd:/' Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist
