Making Linux Print through Windows 2000 over a network.

I am a Linux Newbie. If there is a solution that has been posted before, if someone could point me to it, that would be great. I have looked at quite a few different posts, but none give me enough info to solve my problem.

OK. I've been working at this all day, and I just can't get this to work. I am completely miffed as to what I may be doing wrong. I have Mandrake 9.2 running on AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1 GB RAM, etc. I have CUPS installed and I have shared my HP PSC 1200 All-in-one through Windows 2000 on a separate machine. I'm using both through a KVM. I have followed several different procedures exactly, but have gotten no where.

I've set up a user account in Windows so that Linux is able to access my shares. Under Mandrake Linux Printer Management Tool 0.1, I've gone to Add Printer and tried selecting all of the following and none work: Printer on remote lpd server, Network printer (TCP/Socket), Printer on SMB/Windows 95/98/NT server, and Enter a printer device URL. I've tried entering the hostname, share-name, user-name, and password in the appropriate fields. I even tried the "user-name:password@hostname" format. All to no avail.

The Printer Management Tool will go as far to recognize the printer share and even installs hpoj, but when I try printing test pages, it does nothing. If anyone has a solution, under Mandrake, for this issue I'd greatly appreciate your input. I thank you in advance for your advise.

BTW: I would prefer to keep the printer connected to my Win2k Machine because all of it's features are fully implemented in Windows.

Hello Buddy,
That is something I've setting up for more than 3 months and I have failed so far until the last time when I issued a test page and all my ream of papers was printed on some codes I can't understand.
If you happen to get that cool answer from somebody don't forget to send it to me.
Am using Redhat Linux 9.0

Hello,

I have Fedora Core 1 on one pc and win2k with a HP DeskJet 840c printer connected to it on another pc.
In the Gnome printer manager of Fedora I managed to add the printer successfully just by selecting "SMB shared printer" or something like that and entering the ip address of the win2k box, the share name of the printer and (depending on whether you work with users/passwords on your win2k box or not) the username and password. You'll have to:
- make sure Samba (SMB) is installed on your Linux box (I selected it during installation);
- share your printer on your win2k box;
- know the ip address of your win2k box.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have Samba installed (I installed it during my initial installation). I've entered the IP Address for my Win2k box and my printer is shared. I've tried an SMB connection, still nothing. It's really odd too, because through LinNeighborhood, I can see my printer share so I know Samba sees it. Also I do have a special User Account in Win2k set up specifically for printing and network duties.

Are there any console commands that might help me? Or maybe a config file to edit? Is Mandrake's graphical implementation of Printerdrake flawed? Is there an alternative to Samba? Anything at this point would be good.

Thanks so far for the suggestions, it is appreciated. At least there are people trying to help me. :D

Update

I've gotten Linux to recognize the family of the printer and install the appropriate driver by using "Network printer (TCP/Socket)" and putting in the IP, so I know there is some communication happening between mandrake and the share. I've tried tacking "username:password@" in front of the IP address, but when I go to print test pages, nothing happens. They seem to become lost in cyberspace. This seems to be the only method that recognizes the share. Any suggestions?

Could it be Windows refusing to accept the connection? Anyone?
