Cool making it look COOL

I was wondering how to customize linux to like the likes of this : images.mandrakesoft.com/img/screenshots/mdk91-scr2.jpg ? That is a screenshot from the mandrake site, and I'd like to make mine look nice also. Thanks!

Hey Justi.

I think you mean this screenshot. No problem. First of all, KDE-look is your best friend. So go there (or anywhere) and grab yourself a cool wallpaper. I think you'll like a similar one called "Grey Matrix". Instructions for changing your background wallpaper are all over, but in short, right-click on the desktop and then "configure desktop".

Next, move your taskbar up to the top. (click on your taskbar and choose configure). Looks like they also changed the width and colours of the taskbar as well (also available under configure). I also notice their taskbar is semi-transparent. You can do that on some themes and styles (more on that below).

One of the coolest effects is the Konsole (command window) on the left half of the page. You'll notice its transparent. To do this, load your command prompt, select settings --> "configure console" then select the "Schema" tab and choose a transparent schema.

Lastly, it looks like they changed the theme and or styles of their KDE desktop. Configuration --> KDE --> Look'n Feel --> styles/themes. Themes and styles are available from KDE-look.org, along with instructions to install and use them.

Also, if you really want the peak of "eyecandy" check out the "Karamba" and "Superkaramba" projects on KDE-look. If compiling from the source intimidates you, look for the RPMs.

Good luck!

Oh man. That's Kde! It sucks. KDe is like a winXP just insted of start it says K. Download Fluxbox or enlightenment. My desktop is really beatiful, and light-weight.

Just as long as KDE items work in Fluxbox or IceWM.

justi wants something that looks cool, not something that's lightweight. KDE definitely has more in the eye-candy department than Fluxbox or Enlightenment do.

If you decided what software to use based on what the majority say, you'd still be using Windows.

KDE and GNOME are bloated, easy to use desktop envirironments. If one sucks, so does the other.

Oppps! And where is the freedom of choice? I find ugly Fluxbox and cool but not so rich Enlightement.
