Madrake 10 Vs Mandrake 9.2
 

I have Mandrake 9.2 and i'm quite happy with it. Should i upgrade to 10 or not and what new features are there.

BTW, i still a noob with linux only installed it a week ago.

tough question & i'm sure you'll get varied opinions.

i'm currently dual booting with MDK9.2 & 10.0. i did so (do so) because everytime MDK comes out with a new version, instead of possibly hosing my good set up i use one install as a guinea pig. that way if things go wrong, i know i have at least one good working system. i did an upgrade to 10.0 from 9.2 instead of a fresh install. with my particular experience, the upgrade worked flawlessly. i have also used the upgrade feature to go from 9.1 to 9.2 without any problems. i would suggest, if you have the hard drive space, to do the same if you don't want to take any chances. do a second install of MDK9.2, get it set up to your liking, then try an upgrade to 10.0 on one of the installs.

as for better/new features.......... well, you can always check out the MDK10.0 New Features page of the MDK Linux site for an in depth look. some of the hi-lites for me were the 2.6 series kernel (faster, more options) KDE3.2 (again, faster, more options) a different layout to Mandrake Control Center that made more sense, newer versions of various apps if you haven't upgraded them already in 9.2 (Mozilla, OpenOffice, MPlayer, XMMS, Gaim, K3b, & too many more to name here), just to name a few things. the install is very easy & pretty much fool proof (once again). over all, it's not really a huge difference that will knock you off your socks at first, but as you begin to explore things, you'll see improvements here & there & everywhere.

is it that much better than 9.2? well, for me, the newer kernel & KDE make it well worth it since i didn't upgrade those in 9.2. other apps i had already upgraded so they were basically a moot point. and, on a down side, you still are gonna need to get (roughly) 300-400 megs worth of updates & bug fixes after you install to make things run as smoothy as they should. but, that's been the case with just about every new MDK release.

all in all, i'd say go for it, but either back up your 9.2 install or do the dual boot like i suggested just so you can have peace of mind that you can fall back on your old setup should you not like 10.0

I have MDK10 installed on 18 systems. The only problem I have is one system has a sb audigy sound card it won't play cd's just scratching noises. All the rest are fine. I even have one system that the only reason I put MDK linux on is because it won't load any M$ product. It keep telling me their isn't a hard drive in the system. Go figure

I always test a new distribution in VMware first, make sure everything I need works. I upgraded from 9.2 to 10 last week.

Apparently 10 XMMS doesn't support MP3 by default. I didn't even notice since I' m using Ogg Vorbis since a few years back, so I can't tell if 9.2 supports MP3 either.

I'm also running a kerberized Apache server, and 10 didn't have the RPM I needed (apache2_mod_auth_kerb) so I used Apache from 9.2 instead.

I've had pretty good luck with both 9.2 and 10.0. I do like 10.0 better and I'd suggest upgrading as there are alot of little fixes here and there and KDE 3.2 looks really nice. Not to mention that I like having the latest version of Mozilla, OpenOffice, etc... :cool:

10.0 works fine for me - others have had errors though. It's still pretty new so it is a case of "your mileage may vary". If 9.2 is running fine and you have everything up to date on it and you are happy with it, there is little point in upgrading - this is the beauty of Linux, you don't have to upgrade with every new release.

the work you want, stay with it. It's a pain to always be repairing your
system to "get it to produce work."

There is no great need to upgrade, but 10 is nice.

I have a somewhat different point of view. If you are on a fully patched 9.2 box and happy with it you might just want to stay with it and just update your apps. If you want the "latest and Greatest" go for 10.0. Is there differences??? Sure. Are they significant??? Not really. Now that Mandrake is working on 10.1 you may just want to skip 10.0 and wait for 10.1. Remember 10.1 will be the second version of Mandrake released on the 2.6 kernel. It is bound to have fixed many of the issues with 10.0. I run both 9.2 and 10.0. My servers are still on 9.2 and still on the 2.4 kernel. If you want rock solid performance from your servers I would stick with 9.2 and the 2.4 kernel. For a work station that you want to play with 10.0 may be ok. Its a matter of personel preference. I like both. My workstation is 10.0 my laptop and servers are still 9.2. It really not that big of a deal.

I think whats more important is your patch level. Stay current!!!

IMO I would suggest a clean install of 10 Official and use kernel 2.6. I would never go back to 9.2 but I know a lot of people are happy with previous versions of Mandrake and that's okay whatever makes them happy is great.

Any way, i've got a prob:
I'm just trying to setup a domain (No way better to learn than trial and error) using samba 3, i'm using the smb.conf example in the how to guide. After adding the a user i try to put my windows box on the domain, but it either says: "Username not authorised", "Domain home not found" or "Username not found" after typing in the password, what am i doing wrong?

XMMS in Mandrake 10 supports MP3...
You just have to install some libs, and to check wich sound driver are you using...
I have to use ALSA instead of OSS...
But when I use ALSA (sistem-wide and hardware level) and set up XMMS to use it MP3 are playing just fine...

At least for my box (Man. 10 official)....

I upgraded from 9.2 and had a few strange problems with it, nothing to serious though. The other day I did a fresh install and it seemed like all those problems had gone - there was still no sound though, but there was in 9.2. :(

Also I liked the 9.2 Control Centre better than the 10 version, it seemed a lot easier to get to the things I needed. Also I don't really like the default KDE theme in 10 - it is just , :tisk: .

Also doing a fresh install of 10 and choosing exactly the same main group packages in the installer as in 9.2 I was very disapointed by the amount of games it came with - 6 I think, where as 9.2 came with well over 20. :cry:
