Unhappy M9.1 boots after Lilo w/blank monitor??

I am unable to get Mandrake9.1 to boot anymore after I select Linux in the Lilo bootloader. More specifically, the computer is obviously booting (HD running, etc...), but the screen goes blank immediately after selecting linux and never shows any off the boot sequences. Here's what I have set up:

Win98/Mandrake 9.1 dual boot (using Lilo bootloader)
HD #1 is Win98, HD #2 is Mandrake 9.1
Compaq Desktop P2 400MHz 192MB RAM
Matrox Millenium 8MB vid card

Everything was running fine a week or so ago (last time I used Mandrake). Before then, I had booted to both OS's numerous times without problem. I am a noob, but I'm pretty sure I didn't mess anything up in Linux. I mainly just set some things up in the Mandrake Control Center and the KDE control center like my sound card and modem/internet connections. Win98 still boots fine when I select it in Lilo, but Linux (failsafe or Linux selections) will not run (blank screen, PC still running). I am able to boot from the install CD and get into rescue mode, but I have no idea where to go from there.

I have read through a bunch of similar searches here but was not able to figure out exactly what to do next since the answers were so different from each other.

Can anyone help me out here before I give up and reinstall Mandrake?

Thanks...

Hi.

I have the exact same problem, but only with the 2.6.x-kernel. Don't know how to solve it, though..

i had this problem and found that i had the wrong moniter refresh rate. try booting into failsafe mode and running XF86Config . then find the right refresh setting's and or driver. also which version of "X Server" are you running? if running 3.0 xserver try switching to 4.0 server
