I had a similar problem with usb modules. I found that if edited /etc/lilo.conf by deleting the line "initrd=/boot/initrd.img", the system boots with all usb functions working as they should.

What does one edit if one is using grub?

The fix for lilo does not apply to grub. In other words, grub does not cause the problem I had.
