Lost sound after distro upgrade

I recently updated my system for the first time in a while, and I've noticed that I have no sound. The Kmix volume icon in the system tray is gone, and trying to run kmix does no good, it just shows on the taskbar for a minute then disappears. I have no sound, but that may be because it is muted, because it appears sound is configured properly, just stuck on mute and I can't change it. Actually, kmix appears to be running, it shows up as a process, but I can't find it otherwise.

Have you tried to kill the process and then start Kmix again? Just a thought.

Hi, you need to look at alsa, if it is muted, kmix knows not!

Try a reinstall, sorry, I know this is not what you want to hear.

But I think it has something to do with hardware recognition.

Or a choice you made during installation.
check out this page for compat..

There's a test script, web-search alsa-info.sh

See how you go, Glenn

Well, this problem is really strange.

Sound is in fact working, and KMix is in fact running, it just doesn't show up in the system tray, and it is not the system tray settings. Also, it isnt every boot either. Sometimes KMix icon is there and sometimes it isn't, but if I leave the volume turned on, sound works weather or not the icon is there.

Sorry I'm not a smart enough linux user to go any further here with diagnosing, but at least it seems to be something easy

This script may reveal a discrepancy.

I'm still learning too.

When you run the script, add --help to see the options first, then run the script.

It won't change anything, it just reports back to you what libs and progs are installed or not.

Cheers Glenn

Well I ran the alsa-info script. I have parsed through the output file and I have not noticed anything strange from what I can see. It is so odd because again on this reboot kmix did not show up, but it is running as I see its process listed. Also the last time I booted it did start and I unmuted it and my sound is working. It seems I have some issue with this updated version of KDE, although kmix is the only program I have problems with, at least that I have found at this point.

Are the kernel modules loading correctly?
Code:

lsmod | grep snd
also grep the dmesg list for fail, error and snd

as for software,
the portaudio package comes to mind, and possibly gstreamer.

yes dmesg was the first thing I've checked, been through there several times.

I suppose that it would be better to diagnose it on a boot where it is actually not working so I'll have to reboot a few times before I find out any more.
