Lost my desktop decorations...?
I don't know if this is the right title for this topic, however I ran an automatic update, there were 21 packages and when they installed I lost my ability to click on the "x" on your browser to close out of it, and when I go to log out, I only see the words "End Current Session" in my logout menu and I no longer see my restart or shutdown bottons.
Does anyone know what I can do to restore those? d-1 |
First guess, reinstall gdm if you are using gnome, that should take care of the logging-in/out part. The windows are related to nautilus and /or metacity.

Jay,
I shutdown my pc and the icons on corner of my browsers restored, however the logout menu buttons still only shows "END SESSION" and the SHUTDOWN BUTTON AND RESTART BUTTON are not there. I believe I am using KDE and not gnome, what do you mean by reinstalling "gdm" ? Thanks for your help.... d-1 Quote:

I am using KDE 3.5 Mandriva One 2008.
I checked through MCC and noticed "gdm" is not installed, does kde use a different graphical menu? d-1 |
Jay,
I did some research and this is what I found out. I read on another post that I may somehow be logged on as superuser, thus I cannot shut down through normal user using graphical shutdown. Prior to updates, I messed around with that 3D effect in MCC, so I changed it back and shutdown through Konsole, took the 3D effect away, and when I restarted I did get a backtrace error menu warning that gdm was missing. But my log off shutdown menu restored itself. Not sure why this occurred. Anyway, everything is back and I have no idea what I did or what occurred. d-1 |
Good to hear it. And sorry about the delay in getting back to you. In case you wonder, gdm is the "graphical display manager". It controls the log-in and log-out screens. If you are using KDE, you'd more than likely use its equivalent instead, viz. KDM. Although it's perfectly possible to use KDM with Gnome or GDM with KDE. There is even an XDM, which is less powerful. Some distros will let you pick your preferred display manager, other ones just set up a default. Anyway, as long as you don't need to, you shouldn't start messing with them.

Thanks for letting me know, when I lost the gdm, I was like, oh....oh..., those words they probably uttered on the space shuttle when they knew something was amiss. It's very important not to panic and slow things down a bit.
