I am also having the same problem. I installed 07 spring. Logged into it for the first time fine KDE loaded up. I went to the package manager and installed all offical updates for KDE.

After a reboot I cannot login via the graphic interface. KDE/KDM isn't listed under the options for other Sesson Managers just default, failsafe, custom and Ice.

If I choose ICE i can login fine w/ my username and password but obviously it's not KDE.

Do we need to edit our desktop file to list KDE again in the manager? What causes this bug?

I have some similar problem with my mandrake 10.1 like this one (no login to KDE), but I can log to terminal without any problem and when I try to log GUI with some users I get errors like;

Could not read network connection list "/var/www/.DCOPserver_user.com_0"
Check dcopserver program is running

also I get

There was an error setting up inter-process communication for KDE. The message returned by the system was..

also

Will not save configuration.
config file /var/www/html/.kde/share/config/ksplashre not writeable
file /var/www/html/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals not writeable

I tried to log to ICEwm and there was not any problem to log

I did the upgrade as well, and experienced the same problem! I can only log into Ice and I don't have access to the terminal.
I did discover from MCC that the package

kdebase-3.5.6-34.1mdv2007.1.x86_64

(which according to the description contains the KDE core files)

Is unchecked, however when check an error message pops up informing me that it could not be installed due to the following missing dependency :

kdebase-progs-3.5.6-34.1mdv2007.1.x86_64

(which also contains the core file)

On attempting to install this package the following message appeared :

kdebase-progs-3.5.6-34.1mdv2007.1.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied mdklaunchhelp[>= 9.1]

I am trying to install the mdklaunchhelp package and will let you know how I get on. If anyone discovers how to do this before I post a response then let me know.

After reviewing this particular thread, it seems as If I have gone slightly askew on the original problem.
Biggs25, if you go to the software management tool and select media manager and choose all the boxes with official written against it and then update the package list.You will be able to select the mdkhelp package I mentioned earlier. After selecting that package you might be able to select the core packages I stated in my previous post. Then log off and you should be able to select KDE.

I am having the same problem had new install of mandriva spring 2007. Then i installed all the updates and now i cant log into KDE/KDM.

I can log in as my username in console and as root in console but not in kde. For some reason I cant even log in as anything else. It says Welcome to localhost and I just get login failed.

I am pretty new to linux although i do know kind of how to get around it. My system is plenty heafy to handle it. i had 10.1 on for a long time until i got sick of it.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated thanks. i gave my disc away so I cant just re-install right now. Thanks
