Login as root

Hello All,

Im running Mandrake 10.1 and I trying to get the login screen that comes up when you boot up to give me the option to log in as root. I just get the user I created during the install...

Any thoughts?

when you installed mandrake you named the root and a password for root in the box just clear the name and type in the root name then the root password and you can log in as root or you can log in as a user and open a terminal and type su then hit enter then type in root password once that is done then you can type in konwueror ./ and this will open a browser as root and you can do what you need too hope this helps

Well actually I can't...

When the system boots up, I ONLY get that one user I created during the install.

I need root to be presented as one of the login choices.

The option of clearing the name and typing root is not allowed from the drop down option I get...

Is there a file I would need to rewrite or a config setting?

it is generally a BAD idea to login as root with GUI. you can access everything through controlcenter and as root on the commandline.

you could try to disable autologin at boot. if this doesn't help, deactivate X at boot through control center, and login as root on commandline, then start X manually.

how do startx manually in root mandrake 10.1 I tried startx -- :2 vt8 which worked on 10 but not now

Kill the display manager first...

e.g.

su

service dm stop

exit

mmm, try changing the runlevel to 3

tewaru 02-14-2005 12:15 PM

Tried that now just get red screen, however remeber old trick of going thru login manager and suprise it still works.
Thanks

As mentioned by others, direct logins as root are not really recommended. Why not login as a normal user and then do whatever you need to do by temporarily switching to root using "su".

Menu -> System -> Configuration -> Configure your desktop -> System -> Login Manager -> Users tab
Click the "Administrator Mode" button.
Uncheck the box next to "root".

Hope it helps.

Thanks Toonses82

I was having the same problem. Sometimes it is easier using a GUI instead of the console.

Thanks.
