recently I have upgraded my nvidia driver to 1.0-4496.
It works fine. But there seems to be a difference compared to previous updates (.run and .rpm) in that it doesn't load automatically . Maybe I should say the update doesn't configure the system to load it on boot. So anyway I put an entry in /etc/rc.local for `insmod nvidia`. This took care of the problem...
until I decided to setup autologin thru drakconf -> DrakBoot. Apparently the autologin part happens before rc.local is run. Anyway the screen flashes about three times (text messages - blank - repeat) and ends up at a tty. Removing the "nvidia" reference in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (going back to "nv") fixes it so that autologin works. Boots directly into an X session (KDE in this instance). But of course without accelerated graphics.
In previous updates of nvidia (may have been all on redhat systems) the box always ended up with the command to load the driver set properly in the init sequence.
Is there something different this time? Does it work differently on Mandrake?
Is there another place - like in rc3.d/ - to put this insmod command so it precedes anything else graphics-related?
